The ever-popular game of POLO has begun again, I am glad to say, as it is a most pleasant diive or ride out to watch it in the cool of the afternoon. During the last week I have noticed several ladies quite deep in this, the most exciting of games, amongst them being Mrs (Dr.) Purchas. Mrs W. Friday was. of course, made a day of general rejoicing, and numerous picnics by land and water took place. In the evening the ONEHUNGA MUSICAL SOCIETY gave a grand limelight entertainment in the 1.0.G.T. Hall. Instead of showing the ‘ Scenic Gems of New Zealand ’ as set forth in the programme. Mr Cooper substituted scenes from the ‘ Wreck of the s.s. Wairarapa,’ which caused quite a thrill through the audience. The pictures, being the same as those shewn in the Graphic, seemed to be too painfully real when enlarged and shewn by limelight. All the items on the programme were illustrated by splendid views. The orchestra opened the concert and closed it by an instrumental selection played in good style under Mr Gatland's conductorship. The Misses Harrison. Robertson, and Donovan, and the Messrs Gatland, Jackson, Watts, Robb, Higgins, Taylor, Meredith, and Harrison gave songs and recitations, which were thoroughly enjoyed. The Society is in rather a languishing condition at present, and circulars have been issued asking for a larger amount of support from the public. If this is not accorded it is feared that the Musical Society will die a natural death. THE GRAMMAR SCHOOL SPORTS passed off as successfully as usual this year. A large number of visitors assembled in the Domain during the afternoon. Music and tea (the latter superintended by the elder girls) were enjoyed in the intervals between events.
