NAPIER.

Dear Bee, October 23. That fascinating game PROGRESSIVE EUCHRE still seems to hold its own, the latest being one given by Mr and Mrs J. W. Carlile, at their residence on Friday evening. Amongst the players were the host and hostess and Mesdames Gaisford, Lovell, Cornford, Reed, and the Misses Fulton (two), Baker, Drs. Reed and Milne, and Messrs Lovell, Thompson, Cornford, General Fulton, etc. A large and fashionable ‘AT HOME’ was given by Mr and Mrs Nathaniel Kettle last Wednesday afternoon. It being a lovely day, many availed themselves of their kind invitation. The grounds were in perfect order, and the house is beautfully situated. All the arrangements were very complete. Music was the chief attraction, Mr Maughan Barnett playing several pieces. Miss Louie Kettle also played in a duet with Mr Barnett. Tennis was played by several in the course of the afternoon. The Bohee Brothers, who are always a great source of attraction, gave several selections on their mandolines'and banjoes. I must tell you that the Bohee Brothers are Messrs Charles Kennedy, Leo Von Haast, and Jack Parker. Mr Davidson was also there, and sang two or three songs very sweetly. Amongst the crowd there were Mrs and Miss Ormond, Mrs Nelson, Miss Nelson, Mrs Logan, Mrs Kinross White, Mrs F. W. Williams Mrs and the Misses Marden, Mrs and Miss Cornford, Mrs P. S. McLean. Mr and Mrs Bridges. Miss Cotterill, Mr and Mrs Courtenay Bowen. Miss Baker, the Misses McGowan, Miss Kennedy. Mrs Hoadley, Mrs G. Sainsbury, Mrs G. Morris, etc., etc. Light refreshments, consisting of tea, coffee, and ice creams, etc., were partaken of during the afternoon. AMUSEMENTS. Walter Bentley and his company are performing at the Theatre Royal. , . A benefit concert was given to Mr Raynor and was attended by all the elite, several novelties in the programme attracting every one. Mr Arthur Chapman made hi debut as a ventriloquist, and must be congratulated on the success of the part in the programme. Although his first appearance, he was thoroughly selfpossessed. Mr Charles Kennedy is always a favourite with his audiences, and he was vociferously encored for his charming little ballad, ‘ Until the Sunrise.’ Mr Maughan Barnett gave an enjoyable concert on b nday evening. Miss Ormond assisted him, and also Messrs Humphries and Dicken in an instrumental trio, a beautiful one by Rubenstein, and Mr Davidson sang Kjerult’s two ballads, ‘ I Hardly Know,’ and ‘Last Night,’ with great taste. Mr Deane’s songs were just as acceptable. PERSONAL JOTTINGS. Mrs Gaisford is the guest of Mrs Carlile, and looks well in town in navy serge, black hat with feathers. Miss Beatrice Lascelles has been paying a series of farewell visits, and is wearing a pretty brown Holland costume. Gladys.
