LADY GLASGOW’S ‘AT HOME.’

Wellington, Octobers THE Countess of Glasgow gave an *At Home ’ on Friday, when dancing took place from nine till twelve o’clock, only one ball-room being used. It was a small dance, there being only about seventy or eighty guests, and these were almost all dancing people. The lovely decorations were, as usual, much admired. Indeed, it is quite the routine now at Government House to be asked to walk about and inspect the decoiations occasionally instead of dancing. King’s band supplied the music, and the programme included a Scotch reel and a Pas de quatre, both of which were prettily danced by both guests and House party.

The Countess stood with the Earl in the drawing-room and received, and wore a magnificent gown of satin arranged in broad stripes of pale greyi-h green and old rose colour — a very rich combination, which was further enhanced by deeper toned velvet and lace and diamonds, and was made with a long train. Lady Augusta B >yle wore pink silk covered with fluffy pink tulle, and ornamented with groups of pink blush roses with their own foliage. Miss Thurston,

who is still a guest at Government House, wore white silk and lace.

Mrs Adams wore cream brocade and chiffon edged with silver ; Mrs Newman, grey ; Mrs A. Pearce, pink silk ; Miss Amy Jervois, cream silk trimmed with green ; Miss Richmond, cream gauze with moss green silk sleeves ; Miss Menzies, black velvet with broad frill of lace ; Miss F. Menzies, white and| green striped silk with green sleeves ; Miss Johnston, white satin flounced with chiffon ; Miss S. Johnston, lemon-coloured gauze trimmed with lemon satin ribbon ; Miss Seddon, white silk ; Miss Grace, white satin and chiffon : Miss A. Grace, white draped with bronze brown tulle and pink roses ; Miss Quick, blue satin embroidered ; Miss Worsp (Auckland), pink ; Miss Duncan, grey satin with flowers ; Miss R. Acland (Canterbury), pink ; Miss Gore, pink shot silk with pink chiffon ; Miss A. Gore, pale grey satin with a bodice of deep grey velvet and chiffon ; Mrs Travers, black; Miss Coleridge, white with blue sash; Miss Buller, white silk; Miss Mills, yellow silk with yellow velvet bodice; Miss Williams, a pretty black accordion pleated gown trimmed with jet; Miss H. Williams, a cream accordion gown trimmed with silk lace; Miss E. Williams, white silk and lace; Miss Reynolds, of Dunedin, a handsome bronze silk gown trimmed with bronze passementerie; Miss Wilson, yellow trimmed with black velvet; Miss Fairchild. yellow brocade, and her sister, blue bilk : Miss Skerrett, pale blue Pompadour silk trimmed with pearls and lace: Miss H. Moorhouse, pale yellow trimmed with bands of pale blue ; Miss Izard, a very pretty white silk frock trimmed with lace ; Mrs Ogie, moss preen silk trimmed with ecru lace and wreaths of violets ; Miss Grierson, of Dunedin, cream trimmed with dull mauve insertion; Miss Hadfield, a pretty deep pink and yellow shot silk trimmed with black velvet and lace. These are all that I can remember, but it is quite possible that I did not see some of the pretty gowns worn.

Lady Glasgow has certainly set the ball of gaiety rolling since her return, for there are already another batch of invitations out for another small dance to take place on Monday next.

Ophelia.
