TIMARU.

Dear Bbb, April 23. It is quite a long time since you have had any news about our charming little seaside town, Timaru, and as we have been rather gay lately I must really tell you about ourselves. Mrs F. Stubbs gave A LARGE DANCE, there being about seventy present. It was an enjoyable affair, and on the following evening she gave a children’s party, of about the same number, and the young people still talk about the good time they had. On Thursday THE ROWING CLUB GAVE THEIR ANNUAL BALL in. St. Mary’s schoolroom, the room being beautifully decorated with flags. Mrs R. S. Reid. Mrs Milies, Mrs Turner, Mrs Wood, Mrs Catten, Mrs Grahame, Mrs Young, Mrs Lindsay, Mrs Warburton. Mrs Kennedy, Mrs Eichbaum. all wore evening dress ; Mrs LeCren. as the Duchess of Devonshire, looked charming: Mrs Hater, as Mary Seaton; Miss M. Kerr, in a lovely white silk gown trimmed with green velvet and lace; Miss Moffett, handsome white silk. The most striking fancy dresses were Miss Ida Mee, as Tennis; Miss L. Ruthford, Roumanian Peasant; Miss Mendelsohn, Bavarian Yacht Costume ; Miss J. Mee. Mountaineer ; Miss Jonas, Music; Miss Hassall, Galatea ; Miss Pinkers. Dorothy: Miss Mayne, Hypatia; Miss Mee. Amazon Queen : Miss Murray, Elaine ; Miss Webb, Maritana; Miss Priest. Toy Picture Book ; Miss Ruthford. Evangeline ; Miss R. Ruthford, Mirror of Fashion: Miss M. Bilton. Queen of Trumps: Miss Bamfleld Monte Carlo; Miss Collins, ‘Daisy Bell’; Misses S. Jonas, Woolcombe (two), and Hart wore Powder and Patches. The following were in evening dress, the Misses Kerr (two). Brien (two), Raymond, Pearson, B. Hall, Morris. Bowie, Anderson, Bailey, Letham, McKerris, Mantes, Wright and Maloney. Of the gentlemen’s dresses, Mr Shorland, crimson satin, white vest, tie, and wig. was the handsomest; he was Charles Surface from the ‘School for Scandal;’ Dr. Cox as Negative, and Mr Moffett as a Nigger Minstrel; Mr Warburton. Courtier of George 111. period ; Mr Mayne, Spanish Count; Mr Mee, a Bowler; and Mi G. Kerr, Naval, were also good. In evening dress : Messrs Bilton, Eichbaum, Seymour, Captain Foote, Messrs Raymond (two), LeCren (two), A. Bourne. Jackson, Catten, C. Buchanan, Lough, McGuinness, Gardner, W. Morgan. Robins. Allan. Young, Gooch, Cooper, Dr. Morris. Messrs J. C. Lane, and F. McCullough. The members of the Ball Committee—Messrs C. H. Trip. Hassall, Raymond, Bryan, Bilton, Le Cren (two), Paul Waite, Bourne—wore the uniform of the Club, white with blue facings, blue Maltese crosses on tie and coat. The Rowing Club are to be congratulated upon the excellent manner in which all matters relating to the ball were carried out, the result being in every way satisfactory. MUSICALE. On Saturday Mrs (Dr.) Reid gave a large musicale, about seventy being present. . There is to be a very large wedding. Over two hundred invitations are out and accepted.
