HASTINGS.

Dear Bee, March 19. RACES. Our March meeting was undoubtedly a success. There may not have been quite as many people as at previous meetings, but those who were present seemed bent on enjoyment, and the gowns were very smart. Some of those who were present were Mesdames J. N. Williams. Fred Nelson. Frank Nelson. Fitzroy, Russell, Newman (Wellington). Kinross, White. Gore, Fenw’icke, Donnelly, Hoadley, Reed, Vickerman, Sydney Johnston. Lean. Montgomery. Mason. Carlile, Lowry, Carlyon. Haig. Tyreman, Morris, and the Misses Russell (three), Williams (two). Sydney Johnston. Inglis, Ormond (two), Lowry, Seale. Taylor, Tyreman, Donnelly, Shaw (two). Baker, Rhodes, Hughes, and crowds more. Some of the gowns were exceedingly pretty. Mrs J. N. Williams wore a lovely shaded plum silk gown, lovely bonnet to match ; Mrs Fred Nelson, elegant grey costume, small gold bonnet; Mrs Fitzroy. grey gown, black and gold jacket, small bonnet; Mrs Donnelly, as usual,’ looked exceedingly well in a handsome black gown, heliotrope yoke and cuffs covered with black silk lace, large black hat with black and heliotrope bows; Mrs Lean, pale green gow n trimmed with black insertion, black hat with black feathers ; Mrs Sydney Johnston, pretty brown costume, and bonnet to match ; Mrs Montgomery, dark gown trimmed with magenta ribbon velvet, white straw hat with yellow flowers ; Mrs Haigh. stylish cream gown, black hat with gold crown and feathers; Mrs Carlile, fawn costume, black hat with sweet peas of many colours; Mrs Vickerman. white linen gown, white waistcoat, black flat hat with pink roses ; Mrs Lang (who is on a visit to her mother, Mrs Tanner), black brocaded gown with yellow yoke and cuffs covered with black lace, black hat with yellow flowers; Mrs Crosse, drab-coloured gown, black bonnet with yello v roses ; Mrs Fenwick, lovely sapphire blue silk gown trimmed with rows of white ribbon velvet, white hat with black bows and black wings; Mrs Gore, grey gown, small gold bonnet; Mis* Russell, pretty light gown, large white hat: Miss Cara Russell, cream gown with black insertion, large white hat with white feathers; Misses Williams, cream gowns, white hats with coloured poppies; Miss Barker, very pretty white gow n with yellow trimmings, black hat; Miss Baker, pale green gown trimmed with black insertion, black hat; Miss Shaw, pretty figured heliotrope gown, cream hat: Miss Maude Shaw, pretty grey - blue gown with pale blue silk yoke, cream hat; Miss Maud Donnelly looked very nice in navy blue, stylish hat; Miss Seale, light cotton gown, sailor hat; Miss Mary Lowry, pink figured muslin gown, pretty hat; Miss Ormond, cream gown trimmed with coloured rosettes; Miss Ada Ormond, a similar costume; Miss Rhodes, pale pink gown, black hat; Miss Hughes black gown, black sailor hat: Miss Taylor, dark skirt, blue striped blouse, sailor hat; Miss Danvers, cream gown, cream hat with yellow flowers. The usual luncheon parties assembled under the willows, the weather being glorious. OUR PEOPLE. Mr and Mrs Fred Nelson leave shortly for England. They w ill carry with them many kind wishes from the numerous friends they leave behind. e Mrs Russell, with her sister, are away in Dunedin, but are expected back shortly. Miss Gertrude Russell has returned from Australia. Mrs Carlyon has been on a visit to her mother at Fernhill. Mrs Lang (Oarnaru) has been staying at Riverslea. Miss Busby has been stopping at Waikoko. Some of our cricketers left this morning for the South, where they play a number of matches. Messrs Gore. H. B. Williams, and Ludbrooke were amongst the players. Mr Brathwaite accompanied the team as scorer. CHURCH MUSIC. The ‘ Story of the Cross ’ is being sung every evening this week in St. Matthew’s Church, the solos being taken by different members of the choir. The singing on Sunday evening last was good to listen to. GOING AND COMING. Miss Allan (Wellington) is on a visit to her brother, who has taken Mr J. B. Brathwaite’s house furnished for some months. Mr and Mrs Philson. of Russell. Bay of Islands, have arrived and will take furnished apartments until their fine new bank is finished. Mrs W. Chambers (Gisborne) is staying with Mrs Chambers, senr., at Te Mata. Mr Hobbs paid a flying visit to Hastings recently. He was looking remarkably well.

Mr and Mrs Yorke go south shortly. They will be much missed. Miss Cara Russell has returned from Wellington. GOWNS. Mrs Tyreman is wearing a pretty fawn gown with black bands. Amazon bat: Mrs Howard looks well in a pretty pink gingham gown, black hat with black feathers: Mrs Lean looks nice in a heliotrope striped crepon gown, black hat with white roses; Miss Allan wears a pretty pale pink gown, creain hat with red poppies ; Mrs Loughnan is stylish in a dark gown, brown cloak with large wings bound with fur, sailor hat; Mrs Crosse, grey gown, small cape, black bonnet with yellow flowers ; Mrs J. N. Williams wears a handsome black gown with white pipings, black bonnet with white roses; Miss Cara Russell, pretty cream gown, black flat hat and blue flowers. Dolly.
