Deak Bee, November 3. I sent you a late ‘ topic ' anent the opening of the THORNDON LAWN TENNIS CLUB, and now 1 send you a few of the pretty dresses worn on that occasion. Amongst those present were Mrs R. Pharazyn. dark green dress trimmed with velvet and steel, b’ack and yellow bonnet; Mrs Samuels, grey trimmed with dark velvet, high floral hat; Mrs Friend, greenish t weed, black hat; the Misses Blair, brown holland costumes, white sailor hats; Miss K. Johnston, grey, with zouave of grey and white applique lace: Miss F. Johnston, white gown and jacket, sailor hat; Miss Marshall (Taranaki), grey crepe, cream hat with buttercups; Miss Barclay, grey dress trimmed with green velvet : Miss Harding, fawn trimmed with brown velvet, floral hat; also Mesdames Polden, Brown. Hartmann, Elliott, Hudson. Ross, the Misses Cooper. Jollie (two). Penny, Smith. Elliott, Fairchild. Dransfleld. Pynsent, Nebble, etc. THE OPENING OF THE TIiORNDON BOWLING GKEEN also took place on Saturday, and a large number of people were present The green was opened by Mr G. S. Cooper. A capital tea was dispensed in a tent by Mrs and the Misses Hickson, and the gathering was an extremely pleasant one. Present were Mrs Hickson, in black and white floral linen gown ; Mrs Hadens, black and red ; Mrs McTavish. fawn cashmere ; Mrs Johnston, black; Mrs Butts, black ; Mrs Parfitt, black and red; Mrs Gale, grey and green; Mrs Edwin, blue and white spotted costume; Miss Kennedy, fawn, black zouave and blouse; Miss Mliott, white gown, biown hat; Miss McKellar, blue skirt and jacket, white blouse; Miss Butt, black and mauve: Miss Haise, brown and cream striped costume; Miss Quick, black zouave costume and pink blouse; Miss M. Grace, a holland braided costume; Miss Heywood, black. For the FOURTH CHAMBER CONCERT the stage was beautifully draped with bunting, and decorated with arum lilies, palms, ferns, etc. The vocalists were Mrs Burns, of Christchurch, who sang twice, and Mr Day, of Christchurch, who sang once, both being very well received. A violin solo was rendered by Mr Alfred Hill ; Beethoven’s trio by Miss Maude Williams and Messrs Edger and Hill; piano solo. Mr Robert Parker. These were the best items. Mrs Burns wore ablack satin Watteau gown; Mrs Parfitt, black, grey cloak; Mrs Whittai, black satin ; Mrs Fell, black and pale blue: Mrs Pinsen t. black; Mrs Quick, ruby plush cloak ; Mrs Mantel, black dress ; white cloak ; Mrs Rose, crimson brocade; Mrs Milward, brown and pink; Miss Pynsent, white; Miss Johnston, black velvet; Miss Izard, black velvet ; Miss Cooper, tomato silk: Miss Swainson, pale blue satin ; Miss Brandon, pink ; Miss Gore, mauve and black : Miss M. Gore, mauve ; Miss Hector, pink and cream lace; Miss Henry, black and white; Miss G. Henry, white ; Miss Hammerton. cream ; Miss Jollie, white; Miss Rose, pink ; Miss Vennela, pale blue; Miss Milward. black; Miss Quick, black; Miss M. Williams, pink veiling with pink silk sleeves; Miss Pyne, white and mauve. Mr and Mrs E. J. Reid gave a LARGE MUSICAL EVENING to Mrs Burns, who is staying there from Christchurch. Mrs Burns sang several times, also Lady Campbell and Mr Whittail. Amongst the guests were Sir N. Campbell, Mrs Whittali. Mrs and Miss Johnston, Mrs and Miss Williams, Mrs and Miss Grace, the Misses Medley, Henley. Graham, Colonel Boyle, etc. Mrs E. Richardson gave an AFTERNOON TEA to Mr and Mrs Bland Holt and Company. The tea was on the lawn. Colonel Boyle gave a SMALL PICNIC and drove four-in-hand to Island Bay, where they had tea. The guests w ere Misses Williams, Moorhouse, Messrs Hadfield, Anson, etc. Ophelia.
