AUCKLAND.

Dear Bee, September 19. One or two rather smart affairs in the way of dancing have occupied us lately. The winter dancing-class is drawing to a close, and is being finished off in various ways. The FANCY DRESS BALL in the Foresters’ Hall, given by Mrs Hay, was a pleasant function of this kind. Here is a list of the costumes worn. Of the hundred and one pretty dresses the loveliest and most original was a ‘Summer shower,’ Miss Connolly. It consisted of a delicate blue gauze representing a summer sky, with crystals dotted here and there to give the effect of sparkling raindrops. A large hat with crystal pendants completed a cool and charming costume, which instinctively recalled the poet’s words, ’ Decking with liquid pearl the bladed grass.’ The others were as follows: — Mrs Hay, Madame Pompadour; Miss Alice Lusk. He wore a long coat of rich crimson plush over waistcoat and knee-breeches of pale yellow satin, crimson stockings and buckled shoes glittering with brilliants. His head dress was a magnificent wig, tied with crimson silk ribbon ; paint, powder, and charcoal perfected an elaborate tout ensemble.
