PICTON.

Dear Bee, June 13. I have very little news for you. This winter bids fair to outrival all its predecessors for dulness : possibly, though, for that reason THE LAWN TENNIS CLUB is waking up once more, and going in for healthy exercise and innocent amusement combined. On Friday last the season was opened, Mrs H. C. Seymour giving atiemoon tea, which was greatly appreciated on the ground. There were several trial sets, and the drawings for a tournament resulted in such a manner that the games are likely to be closely contested. The tournament will commence next Friday, and as much interest is taken in the matter, no doubt 1 shall have some news to expatiate on in tnat respect next week. At the court on Friday and Saturday afternoon 1 noticed Mrs Seymour. Mrs Philpots. Mrs Andrews, Mrs Allen, and the Misses Meliish. Alien. Seymour (two). Greensill, Mclntyre, Hay, Philpotts (two), and Messrs Rutherford. Greensill (twoi, Markham, Philpotts (two), Andrews, Baillie (two), Seymour and Duncan. The Waitohi Valley folks initiated AN AMATEUR CONCERT, FARCE, AND DANCE, which came off last week, in aid of Mr Yarral. whose accident—which resulted in amputation—has incapacitated him for the present. The weather prevented many Picton people from assisting in such a kindly effort by their presence, but the Valley folks turned out en the result being quite a substantial sum to hand over to Mr Yarral. and a pleasant evening s amuse* ment for the residents of the Valley. 1 he Misses Speed were ‘AT HOME’ on Wednesday to a few of their friends, who greatly enjoyed a musical evening. Miss Marion Speed s playing was much appreciated. as well as that of Miss Maude and Miss Linton. Songs both merry and sad were sung by several young ladies present, choruses also, in which everybody joined. Unfortunately the gentlemen who were to be present missed the train, but Mr Rutherford, a host in himself, did duty for the rest, and if the otuers were missed, no one looked sad over the unpunctuality which had detained them. Mrs and Miss Maude, who have been spending the summer months with the Messrs Maude, of Pelorus Sound, were staying a day or two with Mrs Speed in Picton prior to their departure for Lyttelton en route lor England. Miss Maude played well, and sang too, as also did the Misses Linton and Miss Mary Seymour. The ladies present were Mrs Speed, Mrs Maude. Mrs McNab, and the Misses R. and M. Speed, Maude, E. and M. Linton, B. and E. Waddy, N. Allen, M. and I. Seymour, and Miss Meliish. MR H. M. HASLETT leaves Picton for Pahiatuathis evening, and we are bewailing his departure and wondering whatever we shall do without his kindly assistance. The absence of several of our leading spirits, and other circumstances have prevented our giving him the hearty send off which he deserves at our hands, but which has only been posponed for a time, as he intends to return to Picton for his partner through life. PERSONALIA. Mr C. Scott, of the Bank of New Zealand, has been transferred to Gore, and Mr W. Baillie takes his place in Picton. Mr William Duncan, of Wairarapa, is visiting his old home and friends in Picton, who are all glad to see him. Mr Gudgeon, postmaster, is away holidaying for a month, and Mr Franks, of the Blenheim office, is in charge.
