NAPIER.

(Delayed.) Dear Bee, May 20. Progressive euchre seems to be as popular as ever this winter. Mrs J. W. Carlile gave a MOST DELIGHTFUL EUCHRE PARTY, which was much enjoyed. There were about twenty-five people present, amongst them being Mr and Mrs Sydney Johnston and Miss Johnston, who have not long arrived from England. Mrs Johnston is looking remarkably well, and younger, if anything, than when she left New Zealand. Travelling is so beneficial to one’s health when one is able to stand the fatigue. The other gut sts were Mesdames Morris, Fraser, Balfour, Sainsbury, Hoadley. Bowen, and the Misses Lascelles, Logan, Fraser, and a few others. Mr Frank Nelson, Mr Heathcote Williams, and Mr Morris were present. The former gentleman is staying with Mr Williams. The prizes were very choice, they having been brought from England by Mrs Carlile. Miss Lascelles won the first prize, it being a very pretty small drawing room mirror. Mrs Bowen won a sweet little candle-stick, and Mr Balfour a very choice inkstand ; the other prizes were all nice and useful, too. Mrs Carlile showed great taste in her selection of the articles chosen. DANCES. Mrs Wood gave a small dance which was a great success. These little dances have been very popular lately. The idea is to have a limited number of grown-up people the first night, and a children’s dance the next evening, and very jolly they have been (these little dances). Mrs Bamford gave a children’s dance at which a great number of the small fry were present. The dance was principally given in honour of Miss Peacock, who with her mother is stopping for a time with Mrs Bamford. The Misses Balfour, Hamlin, Blythe, Hoadley, Kettle, Cornford, Wood, Heath. Rees, and Masters Baker, Turnbull, Blythe, Sainsbury Balfour, Cotterill, and crowds more children were there, and seemed to put. in a remarkably good time. CAPTAIN F. G. SMITH, OF THE NAPIER NAVALS, is proceeding Home on a six months’ visit. He w r as conveyed to the s s. Talunc in the naval cutter, Beatrice, accompanied by Lieutenant Perrin, ex-Lieutenant Bell, and Sergeant Major Huddleston, Permanent staff. A number of Captain Smith’s friends were assembled on the wharf to wish him non voyage. A meet ing was held prior to his departure in the social hall of the Working Men’s Club to bid Captain Smith ‘good bye,’ his numerous friends expressing their regret at his being obliged to leave them even for so short a time. Singing and playing was indulged in during the evening, the singing of Messrs Cameron and Bowden being a special feature. Items were also contributed by Messrs Cameron, Bowden, Beecham, Cargill, Swan, Muir, and Calders. Mr Wilson, vice-president of the Club, occupied the chair.
