The first prize was won by Miss K. Marshall for the ladies, and Mr Rowlinson for the gentlemen. The booby prizes were awarded to Miss J. Hamerton and Mr W. Kirkby. Great amusement was caused by Messrs P. Webster, W. Kirkby, and McDairmid scoring a the for the place of booby, and on playing off Mr W. Kirkby proved the successful, or rather unsuccessful booby. The VOLUNTEER BALL took place on 24th inst., and without doubt was one of the most successful we have had. The hall was very tastefully decorated with flags, ferns, nikau palms, and Chinese lanterns, while at one end of the room were arranged the arms and colours of the Taranaki Rifle Volunteers, over which a guard was mounted. The guard was relieved at intervals during the evening, an interesting proceeding to those uneducated in soldiering. The orchestra was placed in the centre of the commodious hail on a raised plat form decorated with nikau palms, etc. Mr Ezra Brooke conducted with his usual ability, and was supported by a piano, cornet, and four violins, which provided a good supply of new dance pieces. The supper was all that could be desired. Owing to the unfavourable weather a part of the ballroom was partitioned off for this purp< sj. The tables were very prettily arranged by the ladies of the committee, to whom the thanks of all present is due for the delicacies they provided. '1 here were a number of pretty dresses in the room. A few of those I remember were: Mrs Harry Bayly (Stratford), handsome white satin ; Mrs Jas. Paul, rich blue corded silk with old gold sleeves; Mrs A. D. Gray, lovely white silk with pearls; Mrs A.
