CHRISTCHURCH.

Dear Bee, May 11. For the OPENING OF THE NEW GOLF CLUB the weather was not at all nice. It did not actually rain, but was too cold and moist underfoot for spectators, and not a very large number of players turned up. Amongst the number I saw Mrs Boyle, Mrs Pyne, Mrs Scott, Mrs Burns, Mrs Wigram. Mrs LomaxSmith, Mrs Pitman, the Misses Rhodes, Nedwill, Cowlishaw, Hutton, Campbell. Worthy. Murray-Aynsley, and Thomson. The costume is most becoming, and I am sure those who wore skirts in the least shade of the style will be glad to adopt the short ones. On Friday for the second day’s play there was a much better attendance, nearly thirty ladies appearing. Two days a week are fixed upon, Monday and Friday. VERY ENJOYABLE AND CREDITABLE CONCERT was given on Wednesday in the Oddfellows’ Hall by the pupils of Mr Lund, showing the careful training of the master ana both ability and perseverance of some of the pupils. Miss Jackson played admirably a most difficult piece, the ‘ Andante from Concerto in G,’ by Beethoven; Miss Ida Co wlisha w was equally successful with Liszt’s fantasia on Wagner’s ‘ Tannhauser,’ another very difficult composition. Miss C. Lingard’s playing is becoming wellknown, and her rendering of Griegs? ‘ Bridal Procession ’ was, one might say, perfect. Miss E. Van Asch sang very sweetly. The other performers were Misses Anderson. Izard, Hill, Bullen, Hughes, Prius. Hirtzel, and Harris, their contributions being very enjoyable. Mr Lund is to be congratulated on the proficiency of his pupils. The Art Gallery closed on Saturday evening, and as a pleasant resort will be much missed. The Truda Brothers played some charming selections, and the room was crowded. THE MEET TOOK PLACE AT I‘REBBLETON on Saturday with a very fair muster of spectators considering the boisterous weather. Among those present were Mrs Stead, Mrs Lee. Mrs Alan Scott, Mr and Mrs O’Rorke, Mr and Mrs Heaton Rhodes, Mr and Mrs Gould, Mr and Mrs Clithero, Mr and Mrs McDonald, Misses Rhodes, Nedwill, Todhunter, Cowlishaw, Hclmore, Gould, and Sise. We are looking forward with great pleasure to the Gaiety Company next week. Mr and Mrs F. de C. Malet are passengers to England by the Kaikoura, sailing to-day. Mrs Alan Scott and family started for England, via Melbourne, this week, and I hear Mrs Tancred is also going shortly. Mr and Mrs O’Rorke are paying Christchurch a visit and may often be seen driving about in a well-appointed four-wheel dog cart. (Pardon my ignorance if it has another name.)
