TENNIS.

The Nelson Lawn and Tennis Clubs have been playing off several tournaments this last week. So far only the first round of the mixed doubles has been finished, when Miss Collins and Jones beat Miss Heaps and Garrett by 2 sets to love, 6 2 and 6-4. Miss Wright and Broad beat Miss Pitt and Macquarrie 2 sets to love, 6 3 and 6-2. Mrs L. Adams and Preshaw beat Miss Ledger and Corrigan 2 sets to love. 6 2 and 64. Miss Mackay and Harden obtained a bye.

The Waipawa lawn tennis tournament came to a conclusion on Friday, Miss M. Bibby and Mr W. S. Russell beating Miss Miller and Mr Stewart Bridge. The excitement was intense, great interest being taken in this tournament. At the conclusion of the final round, Mr S. Bridge made a very neat little speech, in which on behalf of the visitors he thanked the members of the Waipawa Tennis Club for the very pleasant tournament got up by them, also the la lies of Waipawa for providing tea and delicious cakes every afternoon duiing the continuance of the tournament. He felt sure the ladies must have worked very hard, as it was no light duty to undertake to provide for so many as were present every afternoon. He concluded by calling for three cheers for the ladies, and these were very heartily given by all present. After three cheers had been accorded the visitors, the meeting broke up, and not a few were sorry to know that the tournament had come to an end, the time had passed so pleasantly.

At the Eden and Epsom Lawns the inter club tournaments aroused considerable interest. Miss Ring and Miss

Preken defeated Miss Paton and Miss Hesketh ; Miss Bull and Mr McFarlane beat Miss Ring and Mr Scherff with great ease, and Uptill and Sykes had no serious trouble in disposing of Marriner and Goldie.

On the Auckland Lawn the best tennis of the season was witnessed. Miss E. Hardy and Hooper beat Miss E. Scherff and Stevenson after some hard fighting. Had Mr Stevenson had another partner, one of the other lady members of the Club, we venture to think the result would have been different. Miss Scherff was not the best companion to Mr Stevenson that could have been found, though she managed very fairly. Mrs Chapman and Miss Nicholson played a magnificent game, defeating Miss Paton and Miss Spiers after some splendid games. In the men’s doubles Eliott and Paton of the Eden played Bruce and Biss, c.nd managed to beat them though not so easily as many imagined would be the case. Of these the Onehunga members won the mixed double, and lost the ladies’ double and the gentlemen’s doubles.

Tennis was a feature of more than ordinary interest at the Ponsonby Lawn on Saturday last. The afternoon was fine, likewise the tea and refreshments served by the Misses Billington. Six delegates from Onehunga weie present to combat the renown of the West End. All in vain, however, for out of the three sets played, Ponsonby won two. The combatants were as follows :— Messrs Patterson and Haven (W.E.) beat Messrs Battley and Bassett, (O). Scores : 6—2. 6—2, 5—7, 6—l. Miss Russell and Mrs Gentils (W.E.) beat Misses C. Frost and Dickey. (O.i. Scores : 6—3. 5—7, 6—3. Miss M. Frost and Mr Zinzan, (O.) beat Mr Russell and Miss F. Billington, (W.E.). During the same afternoon six Ponsonby members were trying their skill on the enemies’ground, with the following result: — Messrs Cooke and Ballantyne, (W.E.), beat Messrs A. Suttic and V. Frost, (O.). Scores : 6—l, 5—7. 5—7. Misses Eva Russell and Billington, (W.E.), beat B. Banks and Dickey, (O.). Scores : 6—l, 6—3. Miss E. Bassett and Mr C. Suttie, (O.), beat MLss Edwards and Mr Foster, (W.E.). Scores: 6—l, 6—3. West End won Gents' and Ladies’ Doubles—4. Onehunga won Beth Combined —2.
