CHRISTCHURCH.

Dear Bee, July 21. This has been a gala week in College annals, about thirty students of the Otago University and a number of their friends spending a week in Christchurch, and giving us, as the saying goes, ‘a taste of their quality;’ which, all who were fortunate enough to witness the two performances they gave us at the Theatre Royal, pronounced remarkably good. They came at a very unfortunate time immediately following the opera company and the Musin concerts, still they were rewarded with very good houses. A full description has appeared of ttieir Dunedin performances and I can only say we were not disappointed but agreeably surprised, the acting and dressing being a long way above the average. Among the audience were Professor and Mrs Cook, Mr and Mrs Batham, Mrs J. Gibbs, Mrs Stead, and Miss Palmer, Mrs Meeson, Mrs W. Wilson, Mr and Miss Connal, Mrs Bickerton, the Misses Clarke, Meeson, Fairhurst, Burns, Stoddart, Worthy, Robison, Common and many others. DANCE AT CANTERBURY COLLEGE. On Wednesday the students of the Canterbury College gave a dance in honour of the visitors, which took place in Hobb s Buildings, and was a great success, about two hundred people being present. The committee, the Misses Tindal, Baldwin and Richmond, and Messrs Bull, Robison, Jack and Gibson worked most energetically, and the thanks of all are due to them, the music, supper, and the floor being all that, could be desired, borne ot the dresses worn were very pretty. Miss Marshall had a lovely shade of pale blue in rich stiff silk made with Watteau train; Miss Clarke, heliotrope spotted gauze with velvet corselet bodice, and sleeves to match; Mrs Tendall, prune satin .gown, and cardinal plush cloak; Miss E. Cox, eau-de-nil gauze with crimson poppies; her sister in pale blue net and chiffon; Mrs Bickerton, green silk ; Miss Bickerton, a Grecian dress of gold spotted terracotta net over silk, gold bands in her hair; Miss M. Bell, cream silk and chiffon with gold girdle; Miss lendall, cream Liberty silk; Miss Hardcastle, a becoming dress ot pink nun s veiling and silk, with folds ot the stuff round the short bodicp ar.d tied in a large bow between the shoulders; Miss Tindal. rich white silk with white lace ruching on skirt and bodice; Miss Alexander (Dunedini. pale blue spotted gauze; Miss Stone (Dunedin), wore black; Miss Gibson, black net with cardinal ribbons and sash; Miss Montgomery (Dunedin), looked very pretty in trained black net with pale green shoulder knots and streamers ; Miss beager, trained black net; Miss Davy, cream silk with train Medici collar edged with beads ; Mrs Merton, black lace ; Mrs May, rich black broche, gold vest and trimming; Miss Richmond, pink nuns veiling and chiffon ; Miss Meeson, white silk ; Miss I horpe, pale blue silk and chiffon ; Miss A. Stoddart, black lace ; her sister, cream nun’s veiling with pretty folds of pink on the bodice; Miss Barm coat, a lovely white silk trimmed with lace; Miss roster. Miss Cahot, Miss Rainey. Misses Taylor, Henderson Crosbie, r isher, Dodds, Simpson, Hookham, Keppel and many others were present. MRS STEADS LUNCHEON PARTY. On Thursday a eharming luneheon party was given by Mrs Stead, Strowan, the table being a perfect picture. Among the guests were Mrs Denniston, Mrs Reeves, Mrs 1 itman, Mrs Tabart, Mrs Buller, Mrs and Miss Stewart, Mrs Carrick and others, about sixteen in all, more joining in the afternoon when a pleasant time with music etc. was spent. Mrs Denniston had a LUNCHEON PARTY AND AFTERNOON TEA on Wednesday, for her niece Miss Turton, wdw is paying her a visit. Some of those present were Mrs \\ ildmg. Misses Hclmorc, the Misses Cowlishaw, the Misses Gerrard and several more. THE WAIHENE CLUB met at Mrs Reeves, Latimer Square, last week. Miss Moorhouse created great amusement with ‘ fortune telling, which, of course., always comes true. Miss Worthy gave a recitation, M l * B * Reeves a reading, a charade was acted, and w.th music a full afternoon's programme was worked out. tennis. A large number of A B ' sembled on Friday afternoon, and tea was kindly piovided by the Misses Thorpe, Von Haast, Tendall and Marshall. KETTLEDRUM AT MRS CARRICK S. On Monday Mrs Carrick, Park Terraco, gave an afternoon tea mostly for her girl friends. Among the number were the Misses Cunningham, Greenwood, Graham, Thomas, Way., Lingard and several more.
