FORWARD AND BACKWARD.

* Mamma,’ said Jackie, ‘ jead ?’ ‘ Yes,’ replied mamma. ‘ Get the book.’ Jackie brought Mother Goose, and opened it in the middle. Mamma read a page. ‘ Now turn over,’ she said. Jackie turned a leaf backward. ‘That isn't right, Jackie. You're turning backward. See ? The rest of the story is over here. ’ ‘ No ; f’ontward !’ declared Jackie. Mamma laughed, and began another rhyme. She was used to reading all sorts of ways. But when Jackie had turned backward a few times, she said : ‘ Jaekie, you are turning backward. Now look ! We read the stories this way. We have to turn the leaves so, and go forward when we read.’ ‘No,’ answered Jackie, stoutly. ‘ Dat f’ontward, mamma. See !’ He turned the leaves quickly over to the front of the book, and showed the front cover. ‘ Dat de Pont !’ Then he turned them over again to the back, and showed the back cover of the book. ‘ Dat backward, mamma !’ Now what could mamma say ? The baby was right, after all.
