Madame comes home from the theatre and finds Minna (the servant) sitting in the kitchen reading a book by the light of two candles. She is naturally annoyed at the girl’s extravagance. ‘ Why, Minna, actually reading novels with two candles burning’’ ‘Not at all, ma'ain,’ was the servant's cool reply ; • that's only one candle ! I just cut it in two half an-hour ago.'
