HASTINGS.

Dear Bee, June 10. The first of the Cinderella dances has taken place, and was a great success. The dance was a most fashionable one. All the Hastings aristocracy and a favoured few from Napier graced the room with their presence. Some of the gowns were very pretty. Opinions differ as to who was the belle. Some thought Mrs K. Beetham ; others thought Mrs Fulton ami Mrs Vickennan shared the honours. Mrs Beetham looked very nice in white with red flowers ; Mrs Vickennan was much admired in a black net gown trimmed with yellow ribbons, yellow birds on her shoulders and in her hair ; Mrs Fulton also looked exceedingly well in black net with tufts of white feathers. Of the young ladies Miss Lascelles certainly carried off the palm. She was gowned in black net with a beautiful spray of scarlet poppies reaching from the shoulder to the ground. There were several other very pietty gowns. Miss L. Williams wore a lovely gown—pink; it fitted to perfection; Miss H. Williams, an exceedingly pretty and quaint cream gown trimmed with gold lace, ami girdle ; Miss St. Hill, white; Miss A. St. Hill, pale blue; Miss Studholme, dark blue net; Miss F. Beamish, white and yellow ; Miss Wardell, pink ; Miss Nelson, white with scarlet sash ; Miss L. Nelson, white silk ; Miss Lowry, white ; Miss Newson, heliotrope ; Mrs Gordon, white silk ; Miss Weber (who, by-the bye, looked very charming), in pink fisherman’s net; Mrs Loughnan, dead rose colour trimmed with ruby ; Mrs E. Tanner, white, very handsome heliotrope feather fan; Mrs Fitzroy, black ami silver, high Medici collar. We hear there is to be a grand race ball shortly. Dolly. [Many thanks. Please send account of race-ball.—Bee.]

A very pretty waltz has been forwarded to me to criticise by Messrs J. Begg and Co., Dunedin. It is called ‘The Wakatipu Waltz,' and is composed by J. Allan. The first part is simple, but pretty, and there are some very charming bits in the latter part. It is the sort of jiiece that you like better when you have heard it a second or third time. Altogether, lovers of dance-music should certainly be pleased with it, and add it to their repertoire. — Bee.
