There is one thing cynical neighbours never fail to notice, and that is how soon a biide stops coming out to the gate to meet her husband.
Fatherless, Motherless, and Nameless.—A most distressing incident was brought to light in the Liverpool Police court. A miserably-clad little girl, with a pinched, emaciated face, not undevoid of beauty, but with an expression of terror anil fox-like cunning altogether unnatural in one so young, was produced by an officer of the court. The poor little creature was the daughter of an ‘ unfortunate ’ who had lately been fined and had left her house. After leaving, the usual search was made, and there, high up in an attic, without a vestige of furniture, and without a bite of food, the wretched offspring was found locked up. The child was persuaded to come out of the corner where, terrorstricken at the entrance of the officers, she crouched, and is now, perhaps, motherless and fatherless. She is, however, enjoying in the workhouse at least a greater amount of care than she has probably ever received before.
