SUITABLE EMPLOYMENT FOR WOMEN.

TO THE EIUTOII. Sir, —I wish to thank ‘ Much-in-Earnest ’ for her sensible suggestions re gardening as an employment for women. I believe in New Zealand it would pay very well indeed. It is exceedingly interesting, and not too hard work. Of course, a thoroughly delicate woman could not undertake it at all; it would only be suitable for those who are prepared to wear thick boots, and are not afraid of damp or sun, brown faces and hands. Fruit trees would, I believe, pay best, and until they were in good bearing order vegetables could be grown between the rows. A good orange and lemon plantation in the North Island would well repay the care and cultivation women could give. Until it paid vegetables would find a ready market. Two or three sisters living together—one undertaking household duties and sewing, also the accounts, which must be carefully kept to see how the garden is paying, and jam-making ; the other two dividing the digging, sowing, planting, gathering—would find this a very pleasant, peaceful, healthy method of earning their own living. Of course, in this, as in everything else, patience—especially in combating the various enemies which depredate our gardens -and perseverance are needed. Given these and a small amount of ready money, I believe woman’s gardening will be a success. —-Yours, Garden ess. [We shall be glad to hear from anyone who adopts this suggestion. —Ed. ]
