HER TRIFLING OMISSION.
• I CAN’T see what is the matter with this cake,’ the young wife said. ‘ I’ve put in the eggs and the sugar and the cornstarch and the flavouring, just as the recipe says, and it’s a horrible mess. I don’t believe I can make anything out of it at all; it is too bad !’ ‘ You haven’t forgotten anything, have you ?’ inquired the husband, looking up from his newspaper. ‘Nothing. It says, “With one quart of sour milk and a teaspoonful of soda make a batter in the usual way. Then add the other ingredients.” I added them, but it doesn’t seem to me to look like a batter. It’s just a nasty mess of egg and sour milk and things.’ ‘ Where is your flour, my love ?’ ‘ Flour, Horace ?’ exclaimed the sweet young wife. ‘Do they put flour in cake ?’
