FANCY WORK AND MOUSE DECORATION.

Mantel Scarfs.—Someone wants to know how to cover up a white marble mantel which she says has such • a cold look.' Ido not think you ean possibly improve upon a real white marble manteL I woubi suggest rich -coloured jars, and plenty of bright flowers on it; and over it, if liked, a drapery of pink and pale green Liberty silk, or svune <rf the pretty art muslins now so much used. But if you really think you prefer it c-vered, here are some hint.- for vou. A very pretty covering ean be made of figured India silk. Have the length of the mantel and enough over so that it will hang over the ends a half yard deep. Tie one end in a loose knot that will make the scarf fit nicely, then gather the end closely and fa-ten a large tassel made of colours to correspond with those in the scarf. Trim the front and across the other eml with a light tassel fringe of the same colours. Should you prefer a heavier one, make it of velours, the colours being chosen to harmonise with the prevailing tone of the room. This should be wide enough to hang over the edge in front and at the ends, at least eighteen inches. Embroider a border in shades of the same colour, but do not use the light shades. Give the bright effect you may desire by using Japanese gold thread. Make this bonier not more than two inches wide. Let it extend across the ends, but it may be added to these by a conventionalized flower to match that worked above. Fini-b ends ami across the front with a tassel fringe or with tassels sewed on at intervals. Bed-Koom Tabi k—A new fancy, which is verv popular and also inexpensive, is having a'table made such as vou wish, then covering it over entirely with a pretty French cretonne. The cover ean be tacked on and the rack's covered over by a gimp, that on the edge being finished with small rassels.
