LORD CARRINGTON.
OUR readers will here see presented the portraits of Lord and Lady Carrington. Lord Carrington is, as all know, the outgoing Governor of the neighbouring colony of New South Wales. Whe’n the appointment of Lord Carrington was first announced, some years ago, the more radical papers of Australia were inclined to jeer at the selection of an intimate friend of the Prince of Wales for the discharge of functions requiring the exercise of considerable tact, intelligence, and knowledge. The impression was created that Lord Carrington had too much of the man-ahont-town to fulfil satisfactorily the office of proconsul of a great colony. The prognostications, however, like a great many mote in this world, have been entirely falsified by the result. Lord Carrington has proved to be one of the most popular and capable of the Governors contemporaneous with himself in this part of the British Empire, and a greater favourite than many of those who have figured at various times in these parts. Being essentially a man of the world he possesses considerable adaptability, and this, united with a genial disposition and a fluency and facility of smart expression, has carried him with flying colours to the conclusion of his gubernatorial term of office. He now retires in favour of the Earl of Jersey, who, like all those succeeding to a popular and successful man in hrs line, will have no such very easy’ task to keep up with the reputation established by his predecessor.
