THE MEANEST MAN.
He knew how his wife would resent it if he forgot to make her a birthday present. But it was not until he rose that morning that he remembered what anniversary it was. Then he hurried downstairs before his wife went, and, selecting the biggest plate in the China closet, placed it on the hall table and beckoned the dog from the back yard. He went to his wife and said: ‘My love, this being your birthday, I have prepared a pleasant little surprise for you. Come and see how you like it.’ He ran downstairs, and, kicking the dog out of the house, cried in well-feigned amazement: *lf that cursed beast hasn’t eaten the whole beautiful cake !’
* I will die for you, my darling,’ he exclaimed, passionately. you be my wife r i ‘ Get your life insured before you die, and I guess it’s a '' go,’ said she.
