CULTIVATION OF PEARLS.
A new evidence of Chinese cunning lias just been brought to light. An Englishman exhibited an unusually valuable lot of unset pearls to an expert in those gems, who bought a number of fine ones, apparently worth £l,OOO. On weighing them he found they weighed about four times more than they should. He finally took them to another expert and it was finally decided to break one of them. This was done, when it was found to be filled with lead. A second expert, who has lived in China, says the Chinese catch oysters and mussels, pry open the shells and drop bullets into them. This causes irritation and a regular layer of pearl is found around the lead.
