OFFICERS OF THE AUCKLAND TRADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL.

Mr Richard Mills, President of the Auckland Trades and Labour Council and Tailors’ and Tailoresses’ Union, was born in England, and has been in this colony twentyfive years. He is very observant in all trade matters, and quickly grasps points that may be in dispute in different trades. <ln the whole Mr Mills may better be described as one who will have peace before war in trade disputes. He, like the Secretary of the Auckland Trades Council, has assumed a prominent position? owing to the labourdisputes. Mr Mills may be termed a representative of the labouring classes of a pacific character, though when put to the push he is an opponent who can stoutly hold his own.

Mr F. R. Bust, whose portrait appears on this page, was born in Hull, Yorkshire, but lias resided in these colonies for forty-two years. Mr Bust's father arrived in Auckland province in 1844, and was well known in the early days as a contributor to the newspaper literature. His work, •New Zealand versus the World as a Wool-producing Conn try,’ attracted much atttention at the time of publication; the manuscript of another work entitled, ‘ New Zealand the Southern Britain,’ is also to be published at home shortly. Mr F. R. Bust, the subject of this notice, has rapidly sprung into prominence owing to the labour troubles and also through occupying the position of Secretary of the Auckland Trades and Labour Council, and Secretary to the Journeymen Butchers’ Society. He is well-known in the Otago province, having resided therefor 15 years, most of the time in the charming little town of Oamaru.
