Miss Prim (to her class of young ladies): ‘ Yes, I once had a sister, a beautiful girl, who left New Zealand to go to California. She met a bear there one day, and was actually squeezed to death.’ Chorus of young ladies (ecstatically): ‘ O—O— Oh ! how nice !’ ‘Well, Ethel, and how do you like marriage?’ ‘Oh it’s iust delightful ; we’ve been married just a week, and we’ve lad eight quarrels, and I’ve come out of them best every time.’ Commendable Caution.—Mrs Dolliver (to the new girl): ‘ Noreena, throw this water out of the window ; but be sure you look out.’ (Ten seconds later): ‘ What’s the matter ?’ Noreena : ‘ I looked out, mum, and I saw the water go all over as fine a gentleman as you’d care to meet. ’ Willie : ‘ I wish I’d been Adam. ’ Nurse : ‘ Why ?’ Willie : ‘ He never had to be a baby, and have a big strapping woman like you to wash his face. ’
