THE CHAMPION BICYCLIST OF NEW ZEALAND.
T is not much more than three years since the subject of this notice—Mr I jSnajlf Nathaniel Hall — burst upon an astonished public. He commenced learn*n*» *° rid® ’ n November, 1886, and after winning and obtaining places in some half a dozen roadster races, came out on April 2, 1887, with
his racing machine and rode second to W. D. Bean in the Ten Mile Championship contest —a remarkable development after a novitiate of only five months. From this time onwards Hall has continued to progress from good to better and from better to best. Before the end of last year he had ridden some thirty races, thirteen of which were wins, and then in the Intercolonial Meeting of Christmas week he proceeded to gather fresh laurels. There, although he only achieved third place in the scratch races as against the English riders, Fenlon and Mayes, in the test handicap races, he turned the tables on both of these gentlemen, lieat-
ing Fenlon for first place by exactly as many points as Fenlon had beaten him in the scratch competitions. Since that time he has carried off all the New Zealand championships, including the twenty-five mile race at Dunedin last March, for which he has established the record. Our illustrations represent Lancaster Park, Christchurch, on the 26th, 27th, and 28th of December last, with the balloon in which Professor Jackson made an ascent, and the piortraits of the thiee distinguished competitors in the bicycle races.
