ONE would say that Shakespeare, at least, must be the one exceptional prophet to be honoured in his own country, but. widely spread as we know his fame to be, at least one Englishman had no very clear idea of its cause. Some years ago, while passing through Stratford-on-Avon, Air Toole, the English ( omedian, saw a rustic sitting on a fence. ‘That is Shakespeare *s house, isn’t it he asked, pointing t<> the building. * A es. ’ 4 Ever been there?* 4 N o. 4 Brought up here ?’ 4 Yes.’ 4 Did he write anything ?' 4 < Hi. yes he writ.' 4 sA hat was it 4 AVell,’ said the rustic, 4 I think he writ for the Bible.’
