WELLINGTON.

Deau Bee, June 23. Mrs Charles Johnston’s ‘At Home ’ was a great success. We were delighted on arriving at 8.30 to find that it was, in all respects, a regular ball. There was a covered way leading from the carriages, and the verandah was also covered in, and as well there was a large marquee erected for the dancers and others to sit in and <’et cool. A delicious supper was laid in the dining-room, and the rooms were prettily decorated, and a small string band discoursed sweet music for the young folk to dance to. The Mayor and Mayoress received their numerous guests at the entrance to the ballroom, the latter wearing a handsome black trained gown trimmed with maize-eoloured ribbons and bows. I must try to remember some of the gowns, but it is rather difficult, so you must forgive me if Ido not mention unite as many'as you would wish. Mrs (Dr.) (•race looked extremely well in a handsome bluish grey silk, with a thick white ruche round the hem, ami trimmed with glistening beads, and a high Medici colifir ; Mrs (Dr.) Newman wore a lovely pink fancy flowered silk, and Mrs Dan Kiddiford a crimson satin with high Medie i collar ; Mrs Stuart Menteath wore electric blue silk trimmed with white ; Mrs M Sefton Moorehouse, jun., white ottoman silk ami hsse;Mrs J S. M. Thompson, sage green satin, covered with black beaded lace, and Medici collar; Mrs J(' Williams, Mrs Levin, Mrs Parfitt, Mrs Barron, Mrs h’ Crawford, Mrs Werry, and others looked well, mostly wearing black gowns. Among the young ladies I noticed .Miss luissell looking very well in white, ami Miss Izard in black net with old rose ribbon bows ; Miss Lily Izard wore a pretty pale pink; Miss Maud Glace, a beautiful black striped velvet dress tied with a large white silk sash • Miss L. Krull (M anganui), white ; Miss Barron red : Miss Turner Misses Brandon, Miss Webb( Hutt), all inblack "owns • Misses George, Misses Cooper, Miss Ellie Williams, all in pretty white costumes ; and Miss (I’eivy) Smith in black trimmed with white satin stripes; Miss Willis, Miss (Capt.) Bose, Miss Hart, Mrs Preston, the Misses Turkey and many others were also there. I liearthat Mrs Johnston intends giving a series of these entertainments during the session, and feel sure that her kind hospitality will be fully appreciated by the young people. J Some of the ladies' dresses attheopeningof Parliament were worth mentioning. Mrs Fergus wore a pretty brown costume, and small hat with white bows ; Mrs Hislop, a plush mantle, and grey tulle lionnet with marguerites; Mrs Kolit Pharazyn, brown cloth with bonnet to match, with winds’ and sea! mantle trimmed with fur; Mrs (Dr.) Grace, brown costume, ami sealskin jacket ; Miss M.
