AN IMPROMPTU WELCOME HOME.
The privy councillor and hi- wife returned home from their Easter excursion a couple of days sooner than was ( xpected. Dn arriving at their house they were surprised to find the best drawing-room brilliantly lighted up. They let themselves in as quietly as possible, hurried up-tai--, opened the door, and saw, to their intense disgust, all the servants in a body grouj>ed picturesquely round a -teaming punch l«>wl, in a state of boisterous exhilaration. At the -udden appearance of master and mistress a deep silence came over the scene, which was at length broken by the ]>arlourmaid —always ready of speech— ‘ Beg your ]>ardon. < inadiger Herr and Gnadige Frau, we were only taking the liberty to celebrate your unexpected arrival ’.’
