PRACTICAL EXAMINATION.

QUESTIONS FOR THE DOCTOR EXAMINER. 1. (Set out the necessary instruments for — (a) Amputation of leg. (b) Exploratory laparotomy. (c) Hand the instruments in the order surgeon will require for uterine curettage. (d) State what preparation you would make in a private house for a uterine curettage. 2. Test urine for — (a) Albumen. (b) Sugar. (c) Acetone — how would you obtain a laboratory specimen? • ?>. Prepare normal saline for surgeon's 1 use. 4. What first aid treatment can you give to — (a) A child in convulsions? (b) A man suffering from apoplectic seizure? (c) A rigor. 5. Apply the following bandages: — (a) Spica for shoulder. (b) Eye bandage after removal of cataract. (c) For varicose vein leg. 6. How would you treat extensive burns of the body? Mention some useful daily treatment for burns. QUESTIONS FOR THE NURSE EXAMINER. 1. Mention some important particulars to remember when nursing a patient with pneumonia. 2. You are catherising a patient after operation for perineorraphy — (a) State preparation of patient. (b) Appliances. (c) Explain in detail how you would carry out the treatment. 3. Enumerate the chief causes of bed sores. State best methods of preventing them. Should one develop, how would you treat it?

4. Name the various forms of enemata used. Mention the objects for which they arc given. 5. What do you know about the diet of the following: — Gastro-enteritis. Diabetes mellitus. Acute nephritis. Chronic heart disease. Unconscious patient. 6. What instructions have you received about using — (a) Hot water bag. (b) Ice bag. (c) Water bed. (d) Air bed. (e) Rubber sheeting. State how you would treat them before placing them in the storeroom. The State Examinations of Midwives and of Maternity Nurses were held on December Ist. Thirty-seven midwives (of whom 35 passed) and 26 maternity nurses' (of whom 24 passed) presented themselves. The questions for midwives were: — 1. What are the causes, symptoms, and treat ment of "white leg"? 2. Give the ante-natal treatment of a patient during the last four months of pregnancy. 3. What are the caus<es of inertia of the uterus in the first and second stages of labour? 4. You are summoned to a case of haemorrhage in a woman who is seven months pregnant. What may the bleeding be due to? 5. What are the difficulties met with in the delivery of the after coming head in breech cases, and how are they to b? overcome? 6. State very briefly how you would treat — (a) Sore nipples. (b) Prolapse of cord. (c) Retained placenta. (d) Sickness in new-born infant. (e) Transverse presentation. QUESTIONS FOR MATERNITY NURSES. 1. What complications may occur in a case of twin birth? 2. Define briefly the terms — (a) Version. (b) Pubes. (c) Extra-uterine pregnancy. (d) Quickening. (e) Embolism. (f) Vernix caseosa.

3. What is 1 meant by puerperal insanity? 4. How would you distinguish a breech presentation, and for what other presentations may it be mistaken? 5: Give the treatment of "thrush" and inflamed breasts in the infant. G. What is the third stage of labour, and how do you manage it? The comments of the examiners were as 1 follows :— "The answers to the questions were fairly uniform and good, with one or two exceptions. The writing, spelling, and grammar are much better than on some former occasions, showing, I presume, that a better and more educated class of woman is presenting herself. There are few bad mistakes in the answers, the difference in the marking bein-;-due to one answer being more complete than another."
