HAWKE'S BAY BRANCH.

The first annual meeting of the Hawke's Bay Branch of the New Zealand Trained Nurses* Association was held in Napier. The new council will consist of Misses Coles, Grilmer, Hitchman, Inglis, Macdonald, McLean, Ballot, Rendal 1 (Hastings), Sinton (representing midwifery nurses), Wells; Mesdames Henley and Retemeyer; hon. medical members, Drs. Bernau and Harvey. A bureau for the supply of trained nurses and midwives has been formed, with Miss Pallot in charge. She reports that during the seven months since the bureau was opened there had been over 100 calls. Nurses could not be supplied in all cases, owing to a shortage. After the business had been dealt with and the report of the delegates to the Central Council of the Association received, tea was handed round. A very enjoyable programme of music had been arranged by Mr. Tombs. Songs were sung very delightfully by the Misses Bear, Cartor and Wrightson. Mr. Tombs kindly played a pianoforte solo and the accompaniments. ANNUAL REPORT FOR 1924. Your Council are •able to present to the members of the Hawke's Bay Branch of the 'New

Zealand Trained Nurses' Association a satisfactory report of its first year's work. The first Council, elected a year ago, consisted of Miss Inglis (president), Dr. Bernau, Dr. Harvey, Misses Dysart, Guffie, Macdonald, Maclean, Pallot (2), Kendall, Simton, Sheridan, Watt and Mrs. Henley. The following nominations have been received for the next Council: Dr. Bernau, Dr. Harvey, Misses Coles, Grilmer, Hitchman, Inglis, Macdonald, McLean, Pallot, Kendall, Wells, Mrs. Henley, Mrs. Ketemeyer. As there are no nominations in excess of the number of Council members required, these members are duly elected for the coming year. During the year we have reached a membership of 80, which is very satisfactory. There have been 46 new members and nine transfers from other branches. We have £77/15/3 in the bank, and it is hoped that before long it will be possible to acquire a clubroom in town for the benefit of all members. At one time it was hoped that a Nurses' Club might be started. Unfortunately, this fell through owing to lack of funds. In March it was decided to establish a bureau for supplying private nurses. All doctors — private hospitals — in the district from Gisborne to Dannevirke were circularised accordingly. Through an unfortunate mistake, the Nurses' Bureau was not included in the telephone list of registered nurses, but this will be rectified in the next telephone book. However, we have sent out 75 nurses, having had over 100 calls, failing to supply the remaining number through shortage of nurses. Much of the success of the Bureau is due to the untiring efforts of Miss Pallot, hon. secretary, who, we are glad to say, is willing to continue the work. We still need more members and more subscribers to the nurses' journal, "Kai Tiaki." Will every member endeavour to get at least one other member?

At a recent meeting 1 of the Hawke's Bay Branch of the N.Z.T.N.A., before the business of the meeting was proceeded with. Miss Inglis, president of the branch, asked to be relieved of her duties, as she is leaving Napier. The Council accepted her resignation with regret. Miss R. Macdonald was unanimously elected to carry on the duties of president. On be-

half of the Council, Miss Macdonald presented Miss Inglis with a fountain-pen, as a mark of their appreciation of the valuable services rendered by her in forming the Hawke's Bay Branch, and also as a small token of the esteem in which she is held. The Council then entertained Miss Inglis at tea at the Salisbury Tea Rooms, and a pleasant hour was spent. Miss Wells agreed to act as honorary secretary and treasurer of the branch.
