Value of Certificate and Status of Registration

Notice to Applicants for Public Service Positions

It is regrettable that many registered nurses do not appreciate or understand that the fact of their having passed the State Examination of nurses or of midwives is more than equivalent to the fact of having attained the sixth standard certificate of education. The former examination is a professional one and requires as a preliminary tt. undergoing the course of training of a nurse or a midwife, a certain standard of general education. Yet nurses possessing the certificate of the State under the Nurses Registration Act or the Midwives Act do not take advantage of this fact and m making application for Government positions mention their sixth standard certificate of education and foraret or neglect to give their legal and professional status as nurses.

In the form to be filled up by applicants among the particulars required is " standard of education passed M with a note "if applicant has passed the Public Service Examination or any examination higher than Standard VI., particulars should be inserted." Surely nurses value their State certificate as nurses or midwives highly enough to mention the fact of having passed these examinations when applying for positions which necessitate their having done so. We hope nurses will note this and m future make the full use of their qualifications. [We may add that the fact of holding a State Certificate as a nurse or a midwife is accepted by the Public Service Commissioner m lieu of any other certificate of education, from applicants applying for position m the Health Department.]
