New Zealand Trained Nurses Association

CANTERBURY BRANCH.

The Annual Meeting of this branch was held on the 30th November, m Ballantyne's private tea-rooms. Miss Hood (President) presided over a large attendance of members. Apologies were received from Dr. and Mrs. W. Irving, Dr. and Mrs. Manning, Dr. and Mrs. R. Anderson, and several members. The minutes of the last meeting were resd by Miss Newman (Secretary) and passed. Miss Hood read the annual report, which embodied a fair amount of work done during the year. Thirty-one new members were added to the register, and the balance-sheet, which was read by Miss Bock (Treasurer), was considered satisfactory. The report and balance-sheet were adopted and passed. The result of the voting for the election of officers for the year were as follows :• — President, Miss Hood ; vice-presidents, Misses Buckley and Mulcock; treasurer, Miss Beck; secretary, Miss Jones; committee, Mrs. Pairman, Misses Inglis, Walker, Pike, Christmas, Robertson, Garner, Peake, Houston and Adams During the year instructive and interesting lectures had been given by Dr. A. Thomson, Dr- Douglas Anderson, Dr. Irving, Dr. Neil Guthrie, Dr. Bonar Lindsay, Professor Shelley and Professor Wall, to all of whom the thanks of the association are due. Feeling reference was made to the doath of Miss Kassie Turner, one of the earliest and most esteemed members of the profession. A letter was sent to her relatives conveying our appreciation of her worth and our sympathy m their sorrow. The

nurses stood m silence to mark their respect and esteem. Another much respected resident of Canterbury has recently passed away, viz., Dr. Guthrie, father of Dr. John and Dr. Neil Guthrie. A letter of condolence was sent to Dr. John, who is a member of the council, and always willing to advance its interests. Votes of thanks were passed to Dr. Manning for his many past services to the association for which we are deeply indebted, also to Mr. Best for the use of his room for council meetings, and auditing the accounts. A vote of thanks was also passed to Dr. Orchard for conducting the ballot for election of officers. At the conclusion of the business the members adjourned for afternoon tea, which was served very daintily, and much enjoyed. Miss Hood, on behalf of the members of the association, then presented Miss Newman, who is shortly leaving for Wellington, with a leather suitcase, an eiderdown quilt, a copper tray, and a hot water jug. Miss Hood said she felt Miss Newmans departure was a personal loss and she was sure many of the nurses shared her feelings. She particularly eulogised Miss Newman s work amongst the poorer classes of the community. Dr. Douglas Anderson endorsed all that had been said, and expressed his goodwill and the pleasure it was to work with Miss Newman. Dr. Anderson returned thanks on Miss Newmans behalf for the (gifts and their appreciation of her services to the association and good wishes. Miss Newman leaves early m the new year for Wellington, where she will assumo the matronship of St. Helen's Hospital, vice Miss Inglis, who is retiring.

Dr. Crook has taken Dr. Manning's place on the council. The other medical members are Dr. J. Guthrie, Dr. Orchard and Dr. Douglas Anderson. A meeting is to be held shortly to bring before the members the business done at the conference held recently. We appreciate very greatly the special issue of "Kai Tiaki," which will give the members the opportunity of reading for themselves what has been done. The proposal of holding the Central Council annually is an excellent one, as many questions affecting the members can be approached, instead of allowing thorn to stand over for three years.
