Pukeora Sanatorium
Fancy Dress Carnival
An interesting gathering was held at the Pukeora Sanatorium recently, when a confetti and fancy dress carnival was held by the patients and staff of the institution. It was held m the lounge of the V.M.C.A. building, and quite a gay and attractive sight was presented when the carnival was m full swing. There were a number of visitors present, including the matron and members of the nursing staff of the Waipukurau Hospital. During the evening a quartet, comprising Messrs. Richardson, Taranaki, Selwyn and Remi, gave a pleasing rendering of ' ' Annie Laurie. ' ' Colonel Short sang "My Ships," and Mr. George Tucker "Coming Home." Some excellent efforts m the ' i makeups" were secured, and m this connection the assistance of Messrs. G. Tucker and C. P. Bullot was invaluable. Miss Fanning (matron), as a Maori chieftainess, and Mr. Taranaki, as a Maori chief, were a feature of the carnival. Miss Brown (vocational instructress) , went as "Granny;" Sister Gilmer as a pierette;
Nurse Moore, "Black Cat;" Nurse Howie as "Early Victorian Period ;" Nurse Bowman as a French maid ; Nurse Hart as a pierette; Nurse Lusconibe as "Night;" Miss Rogers (secretary of the V.M.C.A.), as an Egyptian lady; Miss Shearer as a Japanese; Miss Elmslie as a Dutch boy; Sister Wilson as "Marguerette ;" Nurse Shires as "Carnival;" Nurse McNamara as a Colleen girl. The patients m costume included : — Messrs. Corbett, as a Chinaman; Haymen, as a sister; H. Gray, as a V.A.D. ; Selwyn and Hedge, as nigger minstrels ; Davies and Richardson, as pierrots; Davis as Baby Bunting; Timo as an Egyptian (assisted by two others dressed to represent a camel) ; Miller as a scarecrow; Goodwin as a mug; D. F. Gray as a V.A.D. ; Robinson as a tramp; W. Cameron Brown as French President; King as a veteran of "the war-to-be, m 1945;" McCormack as a policeman; Tomkins as a girl. Members of the staff were : Messrs. Smith, as "Ruination;" Bullot, at Mephistopheles; and G. Brown as a cowboy.
