Evelyn Firth Home, Auckland

The home prepared, by the Auckland Red Cross and St. John Society for the chronic patients from the military hospitals was opened on November 24th, 1920, by Sir Heaton Rhodes, Minister of Defence. The home is named in memory of a member of the St. John Society who acted as Commandant of V.A.D.'s at the Epsom Convalescent Home for Soldiers, and who died of influenza contracted when nursing in the epidemic of 1918. It is beautifully situated at Point Resolution, Parnell, and is a fine house with accommodation for 30 patients on the ground floor and for the staff upstairs. There is a delightful garden lawns, which adjoin the reserve and municipal

baths, of which the men who are able are allowed to make use. The wards are bright and sunny, and there are wide balconies and verandahs on which the men can be wheeled out in their beds if not able to walk. There is a massage and electrical room, in which Sister Hanan gives treatment to all those who need it. Miss Bird, A.R.R.C., who was matron of the Wanga : nui Convalescent Home for Soldiers until it closed, is matron ; Sister Watt, senior sister; Sister Evans and Sister Campbell on the staff; and Sister Bowie is night charge sister. The nurses' quarters are very pleasant, and comfortably furnished.
