State Examination of Midwives

The State Examination of midwifery nurses was held m December. There were forty-eight candidates, and all passed but one, who failed m the written paper. The questions were as follow :— 1. Describe briefly tbe anatomy of—. (a.) The pelvic brim ; (b.) The foetal head ; (c.) The perineum. 2. What are the causes of sudden death — (a.) During labour ? (b.) During the puerperium ? 3. What conditions tend to produce uterine inertia ? Describe its symptoms and treatment. 4. Describe the care and treatment of after-pains. 5. Describe the condition known as "concealed haemorrhage." What treatment would you carry out ? 6. What is " thrush ?" Give its cause, prevention, and treatment The examiner's comments of the written papers are as follow :• — " The results on the whole are very satisfactory; Most of the papers were excellent ; correct, neat, and to the point. The high standard of training given the nurses at the St. Helens Homes, and the manner m which the patients are looked after and cared for, have made this department of State Service of inestimable value to the public weal." The practical examiner says m one centre : "All the mid wives passed. This shows a high standard of teaching and of knowledge." In another centre : '* I purposely did not enquire where each nurse was trained. In my judgment all of them have received good, sound teaching and training, which reflects credit on the doctor and matron under whom they have served." Another says : " Tbe results on the whole were satisfactory, and I consider the candidates possess a sound, practical and theoretical knowledge of midwifery." Another reports : "I feel it my duty further to report that the ability and knowledge displayed by these candidates were of an exceptionally high order."
