Third Contingent of Nurses from New Zealand
Owing probably to the extension of the war are a of our armies into Ser via , the War Office has intimated through the High Commissioner that another 100 trained nurses would be gladly accepted m Egypt. This was m response to a cable from the Hon. Minister of Public Health m which he enquired if the services of more trained nurses were required. Statements had been made that there were not enough nurses to care for our wounded, and an agitation got up to send unqualified women to act as orderlies and assistants to the nurses. This the Govern^ ment did not consider, so long as there were trained nurses available m New Zealand, would be for the advantage of our troQps, and the Matron -in-Chief having just returned from Egypt was able to confirm the decision. Unqualified women are not needed sufficiently to justify the expense of sending them so far, and there are already many such workers residing m Egypt who can help at the hospitals m all ways that are possible for women m an Eastern country. To send one trained nurse rather than three or four unqualified women is of more advantage. In order, however to satisfy those who were clamouring to go, the Minister cabled an enquiry as to whether untrained women were wanted and received an emphatic reply that they were not. The selection has now been made of the staff for the Hospital Ships Marama and Maheno, and of the nurses to go m those ships to Egypt. Notification has been sent to them and it is hoped that no alteration of the personel will be needed ; but as it is intended as far as possible to study the convenience of the hospitals which ar*e losing sisters and staff nurses it may be necessary.
