The Medical School Maternity Hospital
The Maternity Hospital in Fulton St,, Dunedin, has recently had some improvements and additions which render it much more convenient, and as far as the nursing staff is concerned, more comfortable. The nursery has been enlarged by taking in the adjoining rooms and throwing out a balcony on which in fine days the babies can be put and get the air and sunshine. Our illustration shows the bright, airy nursery with the row of little cots. There is beside the fireplace a small porcelain bath with hot and cold water in which the babies are bathed.
Rooms have been added over the waiting patients' ward at the back for the nurses, and above these rooms is a fiat roof on which the staff can make a roof garden and on which they can sit and study and enjoy .the beautiful view r over the Bay. A corner of one of the married women's ward is shown in one illustration. The
comfortable little ward holds four beds
and at the foot of each bed swings a detachable cot. The beds are Lawson Tails and can be raised at head or foot as required. At the foot of each swings a detachable cot.
This little hospital was established six years ago chiefly as a school for the medical students of Otago University who were unable to get experience in maternity work except in the district or at the Benevolent Institution. Both married and single women are received anel at first outside work was done but this has practically ceased. It has developed into a school for midwives also, four or five being turned out each year. The trained nurses from the Dunedin hospital are sent here for midwifery training and return to the staff of the general hospital. The nurses are examined with the St. Helens' pupils and naturally there is a healthy and friendly rivalry between the two training schools.
