Gisborne's New Hospital

In the care of the sick, the people of Poverty Bay have always been known for their large-heartedness. At the present time a fine new hospital is m course of erection. The first hospital was founded m 1878, the original building being erected on a pretty site of eight acres on the banks of the Taruheru River. From time to time the old buildings have been added to provide for the needs of the growing population, but some three or four years ago it became very apparent that an altogether more comprehensive scheme was necessary. Accordingly, a magnificent site of thirty -nine acres, two miles from the Gisborne Post Office was secured at a cost of £6,000, and plans were prepared for a building on the most modern lines, to contain one hundred

and thirty beds, exclusive of the accommodation for the staff, and an isolation ward with twelve beds. The accepted tender for this fine structure, which is now nearing completion, was £45,866. The equipment will be m keeping with the general character of the building, and it is expected that the total cost of the institution will be m the neighbourhood of £60,000. The Hon. Captain Tucker, M.L.C., is the present chairman of the Hospital Board, but the new building was commenced under the chairmanship of Mr. Chas. Gray. Mr. H. M. Porter is the secretary.
