Wellington Private Nurses' Association

Once more the popular president of the Wellington Private Nurses' Association invited the members to hold the third annual meeting at her pretty home, " Hayara," Boulcott street. This meeting is made quite a social function by Mrs. Kendall. As on the last occasion, the day was a perfect summer's day. More nurses were in town than last year, and the groups of women in pretty frocks and smart hats, bunched in broad window seats, ottomans, and chesterfields, looked like flower beds, and one group, especially, reminded one of an Academy picture of Sergeant's some years back of " A Group of Charming Women." Business might have been the last thought in their minds, but it was there. Mesdames Elliott, Young, Hislop, Drs. Agnes Bennett and Gunn, and Miss Hester Maclean were among those present. The annual report was read, and perhaps there may be space in the next copy of Kai Tiaki to produce it. The balance at the bank on that date was £86 9s fid. Dr. Agnes Bennett moved the adoption of the report, and speaking to the motion referred to the nurses' home and the balance at the bank, which she described as the Association's most valuable asset, and considered that with such a beginning the success of a larger home was assured. Dr. Gunn seconded the adoption of the report, and spoke in much the same strain. The committee of 1907 retired at the end of its term of office. Nominations were

made for a new committee, all the members being eligible for re-election except Mrs. Hislop, who declined to act in general committee, but will still be associated with the committee when any extra help is wanted. The nominations being received, ballot papers were sent out to all the members of the Association, the results being as follows : — President, Mrs. Kendall ; vice-presidents, Mrs. Gibbs, Miss Palmer ; treasurer, Mrs. Thomson ; secretary, Mrs. Holgate ; committee, Mesdames Young, T. W. Hislop, Misses Berry, Lee, Hodgson, Kohn, Maclean and Stewart. These were elected, with power to add to the number. The business concluded, an adjournment was made to the dining-room where a dainty tea and delicious ices were enjoyed, to the accompaniment of a buzz of conversation indulged in by women who had not seen some of their fellow-workers for months, and in some instances years. Miss Hester Maclean gave some interesting details of the working of the Nurses* Associations in Australia, and we were very glad of the benefit of her practical experience in these matters, and consider the Association fortunate in having her as a committee member. We omitted the customary vote of thanks to Mrs. Kendall at the close of a very pleasant afternoon, but perhaps, like the Irishman's parrot, " thought the more." Mawhare.
