RUAPEHU LODGE NOTES

If a documentary of this project could be made, last week’s material would have delighted the heart of any photographer —the shooting (so to speak) of our photogenic architect as he took the lodge-site levels, with snow falling, parkas, scarves, boots, and all, and preoccupation with the tripod. He remarked how lucky he was to finish the job before the really heavy weather set in. Even we uninitiated ones could see a difficulty in trying to survey ground that is masked by a foot or two of snow. The site is such that our view of the mountain itself cannot be built out, nor is it likely that the view to the plateau below will be obscured. As usual the park authorities were cooperation itself and shared our enthusiasm. As soon as the plans are approved by our lodge committee a copy will be sent to the National Park Board for its endorsement. We then propose to publish it in this journal so that all may know in detail what is afoot.

Money is still coming to hand, though not quickly at this stage. Still, we realise there is a rhythm in the phenomenon of fund raising. When the visible signs of activity appear — foundations, scaffolding and the likethe income curve spurts up as more and more catch fire and give. We are particularly grateful for support received from our South Island members. When their turn comes to conceive a lodge they will deserve much help from us in the North Island. Latest remittances to 20 June are acknowledged below. They have been thanked privately and are here thanked again. Previously acknowledged: £1,729 15s. 6d. At 10s., Anon; at £l, Wellwisher, M. G.
