Kkkehard Coberger erzShlt in einem Brief an seinen Vater die folgende kleine Legende iiber die Fntstehung des Namens PAHTATUA: ’’l know how Paniatua came to be so named. Long ago, the Liiaoris say, a chief had to escape his enemies. He called upon his god or atua for aid. The atua came to earth and bade the chief mount on his (the god’s) back. The atua then carried the chief away from his ene* raies, with short stops for rest.. He tlew on and on, and at last depositee the chief safely across the i anawatu river on a little hillock, which was named Pahiatua ors the resting place of the atua. A large township has grown up there since."
