Stolen.

Stolen from the Police Depot, Christchurch, a uniform waterproof police cape, marked j Gr. —J. Gough, on strap, and J.G. in two places on lining in black ink; identifiable ; the property of the Provincial Government of Canterbury.

Stolen between 12 and 1 a m. on the 19th ultimo, five £lO notes, ten £5 notes, twelve or thirteen single notes, 150 sovereigns, several half-sovereigns, and about £5 m silver, were stolen from the house of Henry Cutler, Eiccarton road, who was asleep in his chair, and was awakened bv two men pulling a coat over his head, throwing him on the floor, and endeavouring to gag him. They then beat and kicked him about the head, and one held him whilst the other stole the money which was in a canvas bag upon a shelf in another room; after which they decamped, locking the door after them. Cutler was known by his customers and neighbours to keep all his money in his house. One of the notes only, a £2O, Bank

Stolen from the person of John McMurray on the night of the 19th ult., in Christchurch, a silver lever hunting watch, Ho. 21792, “ J.C.McM.” (conjoined), engraved inside ; maker’s name not known. Identifiable.

Lost or Stolen between 9.30 p.m. and 11 p.m., on the 11th ultimo, in Christchurch, an old silver lever hunting watch, case indented in several places, steel chain attached, the property of William Bennett, Hillsborough. Identifiable.

Stolen from a dwelling at Waimate, between 5 p.m. on the 20th, and 8 a.m., 21st ultimo, one dovetail saw, about lOin. long, by wide ; one handsaw, maker's name, Hill and Co.; chisel finer, long ; one stone, lOin. long by 2in. wide, in Totara cover; all marked Saunders ; two paint brushes ; one brace, ordinary size, and one fin chisel; the property of E. A. Saunders and Co, value £3 Is, and identifiable.

Lost or Stolen from Woolston on 28th July, 1875, a bay hack mare, star on forehead, cut tail, 14 hands 2in., eight years old, branded J.H. on near shoulder, and M.D. off shoulder, supposed to be in foal; the property of James McKay ; identifiable.

Stolen from the dwelling of Margaret Dorn, Tuam street west, at 2 p.m., 18th ult., a brown chamois leather purse, yellow clasp, and inside another clasp opening a centre pocket about 4in. long and 3in. broad, containing four or five £1 notes, Bank or numbers unknown ; one pawn ticket for ring value 3s, do. for ring value 6s, and do. for ring value 8s; purse and pawntickets only identifiable. Thomas Eolleston, supposed English, engine fitter and driver, sft. lOin,, stout build, dark complexion, no whiskers or

beard, large moustache, full face, residing at Four street, Hewtown, is suspected. A very doubtful case.

Stolen at Christchurch on the 22nd ultimo, a tether chain, 66ft. long, with iron picket peg, the property of Charles Allison, Madras street; identifiable.

Stolen from the dwelling of Hay T. Smith, Ashburton, between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m., 27th ult., about 21s or 22s in silver, consisting of 3d, 4d, and 6d pieces, not identifiable.

Stolen from the Ashburton Hotel stables, between 10 a.m , and 7 p.m., 28th ult., a pair of light lace-up boots, Ho, 8 size, new, not identifiable ; the property of James Milton.

Lost at South Eakaia, by J. Allen, of Low Cliff, about 7 a.m. on Christmas Day, 1875, an order drawn by J. Scott, Low Cliff, on Miles and Co., Christchurch, for £ls, in favour of Allen and Co., or bearer; identifiable.

Lost or Stolen at Orari, between the evening of the 23rd and the morning of the 25th October, 1875, a bay draught mare, star on forehead, white snip on nose, small white mark on hind foot, f) near shoulder, value £7O, also a grey draught mare, same brand on near shoulder, value £7O, both the property of William Secombe, Wadsworth Hotel, Orari, and identifiable.

Stolen at Eangiora, on the 22nd ultimo, a lady’s colonial gold bracelet, band same pattern as chevrons, in centre a large gold case, for two likenesses, in front, pearls and emeralds, value £l2, the property of Jacob Grossman, hawker. Identifiable.

Stolen from the Cust Hotel, Moeraki Downs, between 7 and 11 p.m., 27th ultimo, a surcingle, about Bft., long, not much worn, branded (4, broad arrow on top), the property of the Provincial Government, Canterbury. Identifiable.

Stolen from a paddock, Horth Town Belt, Christchurch, on the 29th ultimo, two tengallon kegs, belonging to Charles F. Money, branded small B near lower hoop, and identifiable.

Archibald Mackenzie, late third mate of the ship “ Queen Bee,” about 25 years of age, 6ft., slender build, dark sallow complexion, no beard or whiskers, looks as if he required shaving, dressed when last seen in blue serge suit and straw hat, is charged on warrant, filed in the Commissioners office, with larceny as a bailee.

Kobert Cook, English, 25 years, sft. 6 or 7in., stout build, about 11 stone weight, dark complexion, black hair, dark beard and whiskers, lighter coloured moustache, dark eyes, large mouth, thick lips, prominent nose, active gait, walks erect and with a short qnick step, rough voice and peculiarity of speech, is charged on warrant, filed in the

office of the Chief Inspector of Police, Nelson, with horse stealing, and escaping from legal custody whilst on remand to Nelson from Waiau on the 17th ultimo. When offender escaped he was dressed in light tweed coat, light coloured trousers, large light coloured felt hat, and will probably change his clothing and otherwise disguise himself, sometimes wears pants and leggings, is fond of riding and breaking in horses, works as a station hand, is well connected, his family reside at Wakefield, about 15 miles from Nelson. The stolen filly a two year chestnut has been recovered.

Thomas Jack, alias Thomas McKendrick, Scotch, 21 years, sft. 7 or Bin., stout build’ thin face, fair complexion, brown hair, light blue eyes, small light moustache and goatee, medium nose, a boiler maker, dressed in dark tweed suit, watertight boots, hard black hat, is charged on warrant, filed in Commissioner’s office, with deserting his wife, Catherine Jack, in Christchurch, on the 10th ultimo.

John Charles Davis, English, 29 years, sft. 8 or 9in., stout build, dark complexion, black hair, blue eyes, shaved on cheeks, small light moustache, small light beard on chin, foremerly a soldier in lI.M. 18th Regiment, latterly employe! as station cook, is charged on warrant, filed in Commissioners office, with deserting his wife, Ellen Davis, in October 1875, at Napier. Offender is believed to have a brother, a butcher in Dunedin.

John Briggs, alias Smith, English, labourer, 33 years, sft. 9 or lOin , stout build, smart appearance, dark bushy whiskers and moustache, light tweed suit, dark billy-cock hat, is charged on warrant, issued by Dunedin Bench, with larceny of a chamois leather purse, containing £37, the property of Thomas King, on the 12th ultimo, offender is accompanied by the prosecutor’s wife, aged 28 years, sft. 3in., slight build, dark complexion, mark of old cut on left hand, red merino dress and Paisley shawl. They are said to have gone from Otago to Tirnaru by coach.

Thomas McCreavy, Scotch, 25 or 27 years, sft. 7iin., slight build, fair beard, whiskers and moustache, brown hair, ruddy complexion, large features, a bootmaker, dressed in white duck jacket, grey vest, moleskin trousers, is charged on warrant, issued by Christchurch Bench, with deserting his wife, Mary McCreavy, at Christchurch, on the 11th November, 1875.

Martha Coyne, alias Eitzpatrick, is charged on warrant, filed in Commissioner’s office, with bigamy, description, about 30 years of age, about sft. lin., red hair, dark clothes.

She left Lyttelton for Duuedin about the 4th October, 1875, and will probably be living with a man named Sydney Campbell, about 48 years of age, about sft. 10in„ dark brown hair, whiskers and moustache, shaved on chin, blotches on face from drink, dressed in dark trousers and vest, brown sac coat black Yankee hat, who left Lyttelton in s.s* “ Taupo,” for Wellington, on the 9th October, 1875, but has since been seen in Dunedin. They will probably be keeping a boarding house or shanty.

James E. Raymond is charged on warrant, filed in the office of the Superintendent of Police, Stawell, Victoria, with making a false entry in the books of the London Chartered Bank of Australia, at Ararat, on the 30th September last, with intent to defraud, be being then an officer of the said bank. Description—A native of New South Wales, a bank clerk, 23 years of age, sft. Bin., slender build, 10 stone weight, fair complexion, delicate grey eyes, light sandy hair, short light sandy whiskers, light moustache, chin shaved. He was employed latterly in the branch of the bank at Stawell, and was last seen there at 8 p.m., on the 17th November, 1875. A photograph of offender is in the Detective office, Christchurch.

Henry West, gardener, about 30 years of age, sft. 9in., medium build, dark complexion, dark brown hair, generally worn long and inclined to curl, is charged on warrant, issued by Christchurch Bench, and filed in Commissioner’s office, with neglecting to obey an order of the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Dunedin, for the support of his illegitimate child, of which Martha Farrer is the mother. Offender is reported to be in Melbourne.

Reverting to Police Gazette, No. 21, 1875, page 152, offender Henry O’Neill, therein described, has been arrested by Detective McGorman.

Reverting to Police Gazette No. 22, 1875, page 158, offender George Wain, alias Smith, alias Murphy, has been arrested by Detective Walker, and remanded to Dunedin.

Reverting to Police Gazette, No. 23, 1875, page 164, offender Edward McKenna, has been arrested by Mounted Constable Morice, Christchurch Police.

Reverting to Police Gazette, No. 24, 1875, page 172, offender James Finn, has been arrested by Sergeant Ramsay, Akaroa Police.

Reverting to Criminal Offence, dated Bth ult., George Brandon, abduction, Sir Michael Le Fleming declines to lay an information, therefore there is no charge against Brandon.

Reverting to Criminal Offence, dated Oxford, 16th ult., Mr. Pearson has found most of his sheep, Avhich had strayed on to Mr. Chapman’s run, on Moeraki Downs.

About twenty are still missing, but Mr. Pearson does not wish further enquiry made, as he thinks he has overlooked them amongst Mr. Chapman’s sheep.

Reverting to Criminal Offence, dated Lyttelton, 20th ult., Herbert Blackbourne, deserter from ship “ Langstone,” has been arrested by Chief Detective Feast.

Reverting to Police Gazette , No. 24, 1875, page 172, the headstall, bit, &c., belonging to Nehemiah S. Kingdon, was replaced in his stable during the night of the 11th ult.

Reverting to Police Gazette , No. 24, 1875, page 172, the warrant against George Dormer has been cancelled, he having paid the fine.

Reverting to Police Gazette , No. 23, 1875, page 164, the name of offender Thomas Edwards therein described, is Thomas “ Trout,” and not Trent

Wanted, the present whereabouts of Hugh Maxwell, alias Shaw, Irish, 30 years, sft. 9in. or 10in., sandy fair complexion, speckled face, reddish beard and moustache, has worked for John Carboy, of Piccarton. Maxwell was arrested at Kaiapoi on the 16th April last, for being drunk whilst in charge of a horse and dray, and was sentenced to a fine of 10s., and to pay 9s. for stabling. A week was granted him in which to pay it, hut he never appeared, and a distress warrant issued against him, which is now filed in this office.

Wanted, the present whereabouts of William Henry Spargoe Jose, English, a draper’s assistant, about 20 years of age, dark complexion, large dark eyes, whiskers just beginning to grow, no moustache, sft. lin. or 2in. in height, generally wears a short dark blue coat, a dark blue or white waistcoat, dark tweed trousers, hard round crowned black hat, and patent leather boots. He left Dunedin early last month, supposed to be going to Christchurch or Kaiapoi. Information to be sent to Commissioner of Police, Christchurch.
