Stolen from Kaiapoi, between the evening of the 9th and the morning of the 18th ult., a black and .white sheep dog, small tan spots over each eye, tan feet, white tip to tail, answers to name of “ Tipregistered collar, No. 334, the property of Frank Merton, value £2O. Identifiable.

Stolen at Pleasant Point, between the 10th and 26th ult., one £5 note, bank or number unknown, the property of William Hill, not identifiable. George Hart, English, 25 years, sft. Bin., medium build, fair complexion, light small beard and moustache, grey tweed sac coat, moleskin trowsers, light billycock hat, watertight boots, still at Pleasant Point, is suspected.

Stolen from Ashburton, between the 22nd and 24th ult., a tent, 10ft. x Bft., made of No. 2 or 3 canvass, may be branded A. 8.8., made by a man in Temuka, cost £7 12s. 6d. Identifiable. The property of the Ashburton Hoad Board; Gilmore and his men suspected.

Stolen from the Cust, between 12 noon and 4 p.m, on the 2nd instant, a tent, 6ft. x Bft., nearly new, maker, Trist, Christchurch, torn and repaired near ridge pole in Front of doorway; also, tin billy, two knives, two pannikins, one tin plate, three blankets (blue), the property of Alexander Johnson, of Moeraki Downs, all identifiable. John Stephen, Welsh, about sft. 9i or 10m., medium build, very downcast look, swarthy complexion, small black whiskeys worn all round, and moustache, dressed in moleskin trousers, rather long snuff-coloured coat, open behind, round, soft, black, felt hat, sometimes wears a .blue. guernsey .shirt, a labourer, who went towards Kangiora via Vol. XIII., No. 12.

Stolen from the Prince of Wales hotel, Christchurch, between 2.30 and 4. p.m. Bth instant, two red Crimean shirts with black spots, some paper, sewn on the tails of the shirts with price 12s. 6d. marked on them ; one pair black cloth trowsers _ and vest, waistband of' trowsers- and left side of vest marked with ■ initials B. J. E. B.; and one black silk scarf, similarly marked, the property of B. J. E. Baxter, value £3 2s. 9d. Identifiable.

Stolen from the room of a house being built in Barbadoes street, Christchurch, during the night of the 3rd instant, three 7-inch door ’locks, one draw-lock, eight pairs 3-inch butt hinges, one pair of 4-inch ditto ; nine sets window hinges, one cast-iron floor cramp, one brass door handle, three brass keys, and one brass handle, scutcheons, not identifiable, the property of Joseph Brunt. John Lee, a carpenter well known in Christchurch, and still here, is suspected.

Stolen from the Devonshire Arms Hotel, on the 2nd instant, a brown double-breasted overcoat, black velvet collar, two side pockets, and ticket pocket, value, about 255., the property of James Mooran. Identification doubtful. A man supposed to have gone to Timaru, about 25 years of age, sft. 10in., stout built, clean shaved, wore a suit of light tweed clothes, is suspected.

English, 20 years of age, sft. 5 or bin., fair complexion, pale face, no whiskers,

beard or moustache. J. Williams, English, 24 years of age, sft. 7 or Bin., fresh complexion, dark hair and moustache. W. McDonald, Scotch, 24 years of age, sft. Bin., dark complexion, dark moustache and imperial ; addressed in sailors’ clothes. They took' the ship’s boat which has not yet been recovered.

John Dalton, farm labourer, native of Yorkshire, England, 22 years of age, sft. 8 or 9in., stout build, dark hair, long face, fair complexion, fair whiskers and beard, small fair moustache, slouching gait, fond of talking to children, dressed in light tweed suit, is charged on a warrant filed in the Commissioner’s office, with neglecting to provide for his illegitimate child of which Eliza Page, of Springston, is the mother.

William Selwyn, English, labourer, 29 or 30 years of age, sft. 6 or 7in., stout build, very dark hair, beard, whiskers, .and moustache, ruddy complexion, dark blue eyes, generally dressed in dark clothes, is charged on warrant filed in the Commissioner’s office, with neglecting to provide the support of his illegitimate child of which Ellen Niven is mother. Offender is supposed to have gone to Auckland.

The undermentioned men are charged with deserting from H. M. ships “ Dido ” and “Rosario,” at Auckland, on the 2nd instant. Captain Chapman offers a reward of £3 for each man. A warrant of commitment for want of distress, against William ; Robinson, English, about 26 years, sft. 7in., slight build, fair complexion, sandy hair, whiskers, beard, and moustache, smart appearance, dressed in brown tweed suit, and black billycock hat, is filed in the Commissioner’s office. Offender, who violently assaulted Thomas Dorn, barman at the City Hotel, on the 18th May last, is supposed to have gone North.

Sometime between the 20th and 22nd ultimo, a small freestone figure of the VirgiD Mary was removed from the grave of James Hannon’s child in the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Christchurch. Mrs. Maloney, the sexton s wife, is suspected of having done it out of spite.

Sometime between 6 p.m. on the 3rd and 10 p.m. on the 4th instant, a blacksmith’s bellows valued at £2 10s., the property of James Ernest, Temuka, was cut on both sides so as to render it almost useless.

Reverting to Police Gazette No. 11, 1875, page 83, the saddle belonging to Samuel iMeedham therein described as stolen has

been found secreted in a gorse fence and returned to the owner.
