Inquests.

On the 10th of April, 1875, an inquest was held by M. Studholme, Esq., at Deep Creek (Timaru District), on the body of Thomas Brien, aged 38 years, a carter. Deceased in company with his brother, was driving a team along the North Road (both being under’the influence of liquor), when about four miles from Waimate the dray of. deceased capsized and 1 fell upon him ; his-brother endeavoured to free him, but could not’ do so till life was extinct. The jury returned a verdict - of- “ Accidental death,” and expressed ’ 'an' opinion that his brother (George Brien), was to blame in not; reporting the matter sooner, and in neglecting to get a medical man on the spot; .they also suggested to the police the desirability of taking in, charge persons in , charge of teams who appear to be intoxicated. ■ . > - *.

An inquest was held at the Hospital, Christchurch, on April 16, 1875, ( before J. W. S. Coward, Esq., Coroner, upon the body of (a female , child, - the daughter of Allan and Janet McKinley, aged 14 days. The mother of, deceased had been in a state of drunkenness for some days, in consequence of which the 'child was neglected. The post ' mortem examination shewed that the child died from ■dirt and want of nourishment. The jury returned a . verdict of—“ Manslaughter ” against Janet McKinley. The father of the child was in gaol at the time of its death.

An inquest was held at . St. Asaph street,* Christchurch, on the 18th of April, 1875 before J. W. S. Coward, Esq., Coroner, upon the body of a male infant, aged 8 days, of which Aubrey William and Clara Martin were the parents. Deceased had been circumcised on the day of his death which was caused by shock to the system and loss of

blood. The jury returned a verdict of—- “ Accidental death,” and requested the Coroner to caution Aubrey Martin (the father) against circumcising his ; children without medical aid. '

An inquest was held on the 24th April, 1875, at Lee’s Bush, Oxford, before J. E. Gorton, Esq., J.P., Acting Coroner, upon the body of Eobert Garlick, aged 16 years, a labourer. The evidence showed that the deceased was effgaged with his father in felling a tree, when the head of a maul which the latter was using flew off and struck deceased on the left temple, which ultimately produced death from effusion of blood ' on the brain. The jury returned a verdict of—“ Death from natural causes.”

An inquest was held on : the 13th "April,1875, at Waitaki, before B. .’Woolcombe, 1 Esq., E.M., Coroner, upon the ■ body of Philip Smith, aged 32 years, a ferryman. The evidence showed that on the 28th March, 1875, deceased, in company with - another man named William Miller, crossed .from the north to the south side of the Waitaki river; on returning they chose 'a new ford, and in trying to retrace his steps deceased fell from the horse into the river, and . was not seen until April 10th, when his body was found in a decomposed state on the beach between the Pareora and Otaio rivers. The jury returned a verdict of—“ Death from accidental drowning, by falling off his horse when crossing the Waitaki river.”

An inquest was held on the 26th day of April,- 1875, before B. Woolcombe, Esq., E.M., Coroner, at Peel Eorest, upon the body of James Alice Bitchie, aged 3 months. The. deceased was attacked with diarrhoea on Thursday the 22nd instant, and died at 2.30 p.m. 'on the , day following. The jury returned a verdict —“ Death from natural causes brought on by diarrhoea.”

'Dn the 27th April, 1875, an inquest was held at Ashburton before H. J. Winter, Esq., J.P., upon the body of James Brown, aged 28 years, a labourer. The evidence shewed that deceased, in company with a man named Brankin, left the Spread Eagle hotel, at 11 p.m. on April 24th, both being the worse for liquor at 7.30 a.m. on the 25th, the former was found on the road side about 700 yards from the hotel, and stated that he had fallen from the top of a load of wood (which was in his dray), on to his head. He was removed to the Spread Eagle, where he died on the 26th at 6 p,m. The iury returned a verdict of—“ Accidental death.”

An inquest was held at Warmatah on the 27th of April, 1875, before B. Woolcombe, Esq., E.M., Coroner, upon the body of Bobert Eergusson, aged 40 years, a labourer. Deceased had, whilst in; a state of intoxication, lain down upon some straw in a stable belonging to a man named Hugh Campbell, near Timaru, where he was found soon afterwards lying on his face, dead. The medical

evidence showed that the heart and liver were diseased, and the stomach { congested, which, with the position in which he was lying, produced death. : Verdict— Died by suffocation while under the- influence of drink.

An Inquest was held on May 10, at Akaroa, before J. Aylmer, Esq., Coroner, upon the body of Mary Hughes, aged 40 years. The evidence showed that deceased was taken suddenly ill on the Bth instant, and was found dead in bed at 6.30 a.m. on the 9th. The jury returned a verdict of—“ Death from heart disease.”

An inquest was held on the Bth May, in i Lichfield street, Christchurch, before J. W. S. Coward, Esq., J.P., upon ; the body of Johanna Mulluza, aged 40 - years. The medical evidence ' showed .< that - the heart, liver, and kidneys were diseased. : Verdict “ Death from natural causes.” "

An inquest was held on the Bth May, 1875, before B. Woolcombe, Esq., E.M., Coroner, upon the body of Thomas Bruce, aged 37 years, a labourer. The medical testimony showed that deceased had ruptured : one ;of the main blood vessels in the chest, and a verdict Death from natural causes ” was returned.

An inquest was held at Mount Harding,on the 10th May, before H. E. Winter, Esq., J.P., upon the body of John Haurabau, aged 43 years, a labourer. On the sth instant deceased complained : that he felt unwell, and vomited some ; blood, upon the night of the 6th he still complained ; and : on tke morning of : the 7th was found dead in his bed. Verdict —“Death from natural 1 causes.”

An inquest was held on the 28th day of April, 1875, at Sneyd’s street, Kaiapoi, before C. Dudley, Esq., J.P., upon the body of a female child, aged 4 weeks, and the daughter of Thomas and Harriett Hassal. The jury returned a verdict of—“ Accidental suffocation.”

An inquest was held on 'the 3rd May, at Courtenay, before W. B. Tosswill, Esq., J.P., upon the body of : Gifford Thomas Kingdon, aged 8 years. The evidence showed that deceased, in company with his brother Henry, aged 12 years, was driving a horse in a dray from a paddock on to the main road; Henry Kingdon got down to open the gate, leaving the deceased in the dray with the reins in his hand; when the gate was opened a little way the horse walked on, bringing the dray in contact with a fence, the dray was overturned and deceased was thrown out, the horse falling upon and crushing him.

An inquest was held on the 7th May, in the Gaol at Lyttelton, before J. W. S. Coward, Esq., Coroner, upon'the body of John Mercer. The jury found, a verdict of —“ Death by hanging according to law.”
