Inquests.

An inquest was held at Mclntosh’s Farm, Timaru, on the 6th February, 1875, before B. Woollcombe, Esq., J.P., '.Coroner,. upon the body of William Mitchell, aged 24 years, a labourer, who was taken suddenly ill, and died' in ■ fifteen < minutes from ; heart i disease. Cunningham,- his mother-in-law, aged 54. It appears that the deceased (Mr. Hunt), who was a school teacher at Timaru, accompanied by his wife and mother in-law, attempted to cross the Rangitata river from the south bank under the pilotage of a man named 'Wragg. When partly across the stream the horses were ' turned " rather suddenly, - causing the wheels to .. lock and . capsize the buggy, ( throwing the occupants in the river. ' Wragg' attempted to save Mrs. Hunt' but .on getting her to the bank she was dead. He then proceeded to the assistance of Mr. Hunt, who I "was standing’ in the stream, and whom he endeavoured to get bold of and bring to shore, but he refused,

accusing him , of j having . drowned, his wife, and saying at * the ;same ... tine, “ drown me.” He then struggled, and Wragg’s hold of him giving l way, .‘he was carried J down by the stream ; meantime the body of Mrs. Cunningham had disappeared. ..The jury returned a verdict of— Accidental drowning,” adding a rider that Wragg, the Ferryman, was guilty of. great indiscretion. in using the up-stream ford, in not taking the , management t of the horses when he saw them .. in danger, 1 and endeavouring 'to take Mr. . Coward - Esq., J.P., Coroner, upon 'the body of- Edward Haytoh, stonemason, 1 aged 55 years, who came by his death by falling into c a well. ! It appears that the t deceased, who'was the worse of drink, was accompanied by two of his mates, who saw him to his own door, and left him with 5 his wife. Every assistance was given, and remedies applied to revive him; but he died in ; a few minutes.
