Stolen,, at Temuka, between 5 p.m. 12th, and 8 a.m. 13th November, 1874, one gallon of turpentine, in a tin varnish can 13in. high by 4in square, labelled “best elastic oak varnish; James Price, Edmonton, London ; for house painters and builders.” Not identifiable.

Edward Johnson, native of the Colony, 16 years, sft., stout build, brown hair, cut short, light eyes, scar on upper lip, recently done; dressed in light tweed coat and cap, dark tweed trousers, a groom and labourer, still in the neighbourhood, is suspected.

Willis, scenic artist, aged 37 years, sft, 6in., stout build, dark hair, beards and moustache, cheeks shaved, who has gone' to Dunedin, is suspected.

Timothy Sullivan, Irish, 29 years, sft. 7in., stout build, dark complexion, dark, hair, whiskers, beard, and moustache, a recent black eye ; dressed in dark tweed coat, moleskin trousers, watertight boots, labourer, is charged on warrant issued by Waimate Bench, with disobeying a summons.

Charles Lorenson, a German,. 25 years, sft. 10in., medium build, fresh complexion, dark hair, black whiskers and moustache, worn thin, Jewish expression, speaks good English, but with a lisp and foreign* accent ; usually dressed in black frock coat, light tweed trousers and vest, black dress hat, and states that he is traveller for Bidgood and Sons, or Heinecke, of Melbourne, is charged on warrant with obtaining money by false pretences from the Manager of the Bank of New South Wales, Christchurch, on the 29th September, 1874. If arrested it is believed other charges of swindling will be preferred against him. .

About 9.15 p.m., on the 26th November, an attempt was made to burn an unoccupied house in St. Asaph Street East, belonging to George Brown. A neighbour named Gowen, saw a light under the house, which is not yet out of the builder’s hands. Upon closer examination he found four sardine tins, .and two beer bottles full of kerosene oil. together with a lighted candle so placed that when it burned down it would ignite the kerosene and set fire to the bottom of the house.
