BEWABDS

To Sergeant William O’Connor, the sum of £1 has been awarded for the arrest of Cook, a deserter from the ship Dover Castle.

To Sergeant John Mullin, the sum of £5 has been awarded for bringing to justice John Stutley Terry, for altering ear-marks on sheep at View Hill Bun.

Peter Condel or Conden is charged on warrant with disobeying a summons to appear at the Besident Magistrate’s Court, Rangiora, on the 16th July. Description: —lrish, miner, 30 or 32 years, sft. 7|in. to sft. Sin. in height, light hair; whiskers, beard, and moustache, sandy, worn full and long ; medium head, round features, blue or grey eyes, nose rather hooked, stout square build, about 13 stone weight, erect and active gait. Dress when last seen : old light grey sac coat rather short, old Bedford cord trousers strapped with moleskin, watertight boots, light brown Yankee hat; looks as if he drank. This man is identical with the Peter Conden or Connor charged on warrant, together with one “Ben,” with obtaining goods by false pretences on the 10th July, 1872, from Thomas Thompson, of Bangiora. Description of “ Ben ” : —A Prussian, navvy, 25 years, sft. 7in., stout build, about 12 stone weight, fair complexion, blue eyes, fair hair, slight whiskers, beard and moustache, straight nose, erect gait, dressed in tweed; carries a gun, has worked on the South line, followed by a black and tan cattle dog, carries large swag, which would probably contain two pairs Bedford cord trousers large rib, one pair Aberdeen socks red rim on toe, two pairs grey merino socks, dark tweed vest, and Inverness coat, two white silk pockethandkerchiefs, one with red spots; all the above articles are new. These men are supposed to be making for the West Coast, Beefton, or Wellington. “Ben” tries to adopt an Irish accent. Peter Condel was followed by a brown retriever bitch, with registered collar No. 1572 (1872), and a black and tan cattle pup, no tail, four months’ old.

MURDER—£IOO REWARD.

Whereas, on the Ist instant, Sergeant Andrew Sutherland, of the Coura Police, was shot dead at Binnie Creek, and whereas the following is the result of a magisterial inquiry held on the 3rd instant, before C. Campbell, Esq., J.P. “ That Andrew Sutherland, late Sergeant of Police at Coura, whilst in the discharge of his duty was shot dead by some person or persons unknown on the Ist instant, at Binnie Creek, about five miles from Coura Notice is hereby given that a reward of one hundred pounds will be paid by Government for such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the guilty person or persons. Description of offenders : —George Grey is about 26 years of age, sft. llin. or 6ft. high, good looking, very active, grey eyes, long thin nose sharp at point, dark brown hair, large dark chesnut beard, large front teeth which he shows when talking; has a nervous manner of speaking and standing,

and is very treacherous. William Bristol or Brostow is about 19 years of age, sft. 7in. or Bin. high, slender build, fresh complexion, very light brown hair, worn long in native fashion, light eyes, straight thin sharp nose, small mouth, birth marks bottom of back, mole right side, vaccination marks upper part left arm, and small scar left shin. A warrant has been issued by the Dunedin Bench for the arrest of Bichard C. Evatt, charged with embezzling in the months of May and June, 1872, at Dunedin, £2OO, the moneys of Messrs. Murray, Boberts, and Co., merchants, Dunedin, by whom he was employed as clerk. Offender is an Englishman, a clerk, 22 years of age, sft. 9in. or 10in., brown hair worn very short, small dark whiskers and moustache, stout compact build, sallow complexion, under jaw protruding, which gives him a peculiar appearance. He left Port Chalmers on the 10th June, by the steamer Albion , supposed for Melbourne, accompanied by a young man named Anderson, who has been in the employ of the same firm as a woolwasher.
