A PROCLAMATION

Whereas, by “The Weights and Measures Act, 1868,” it is enacted that it shall be lawful for the Governor from time to time to appoint one Inspector of Weights and Measures for any Province, County, Borough, or District, or for each of two or more divisions of any Province, County, Borough, or District, the boundaries of which divisions shall be proclaimed from time to time in the New Zealand Gazette by the Governor. And whereas it is expedient that Inspectors should be appointed for the divisions of the Province of Canterbury, the boundaries whereof are set forth in the schedule hereto, and that the boundaries of such divisions should be proclaimed : Now, therefore, I, Sir George Ferguson Bowt n, G.C.M.G., Governor of New Zealand, in exercise and pursuance of the power and authority conferred on me by the said Act do hereby proclaim and declare that, tor the purpose of the said Act, there shall be, within the said Province of Canterbury ° r the boundaries whereof shall be the boundaries set forth in the schedule hereto.

Schedule. CHRISTCHURCH DISTRICT

Bounded on the northward by the south bank of the Hurunui River; on the westward by the County of Westland ; on the southward by the north bank of the Rangitata River, from the sea to the source of its tributary-—the Clyde River; and on the eastward by the sea, save and except the District of Akaroa, hereinafter defined.

AKAROA DISTRICT

Bounded on the northward by the summit of the range running by Mount Herbert and Mount Herbert Peak, and also by the sea; on the eastward and southward by the sea ; on the westward by Lake Ellesmere, from its outlet to the sea to the mouth of the River Halswell; by that river to the western boundary of section 1879 ; thence by that boundary and the Ahuriri Bush Road, south to the southern boundary of section 1901, by that boundary, and also by the ridge of hills by Cooper’s Knobs.

TIMARU DISTRICT.

Bounded on the northward by the north bank of the Rangitata River, from the sea to the source of its tributary —the Clyde River; on the west by the County of Westland ; on the southward by the Province of Otago ; and on the eastward by the sea.

The canvas bag stolen from the premises of Samuel Armitage has been found planted in the garden of H. R. Webb, Lyttelton.

Scott is charged on warrant, filed in the Commissioner’s office, with stealing one black coat (pockets outside), one pair of black trousers, two white pockethandkerchiefs (one with a hole in it), one brown, yellow and white-striped cotton shirt, and Is. lOd. in money —clothes identifiable—the property of George Constantine, of Lyttelton. He is described as 22 years of age, sft. 10 or llin. high, about 11 stone weight, fair complexion ; no hair on face.

Thomas Barton is charged on warrant, filed in the Commissioner’s office, with obtaining board and lodging, by fraudulent representation, from Elizabeth Fuchs, at the Wellington Hotel, Christchurch, on the 20th October last. He is described as a Yorkshireman, age about 52 ; height, sft. lOin.; stout build, dark complexion, dark hair, mixed with grey, grey whiskers and moustache, very heavy eyebrows; dressed in light tweed suit, light billycock hat, some- • times wears a Scotch cap, carries a blue blanket swag ; a miller by trade ; is addicted to drink, and is generally to be found about public-houses.

A man known as “ Maori Jack” is charged on warrant with dangerously wounding Nicholas Johns, at Deadman’s Creek, Grey Yalley, on the 2nd October, 1871. He is described as an aboriginal native of the North Island, New Zealand; about 36 years old, 6ft. high, proportionate build, "long black straight hair, slight straggling black beard, whiskers, and moustache, flat nose, large mouth, discoloured teeth ; speaks good English ; dressed in black wide-awake hat, moleskin trousers, dark Crimean shirt, and thigh gum-boots,

William Thompson, late of Addington, is charged on warrant, filed in the Commissioner’s office, with deserting his wife in the month of May last. He is described as an Irishman, 35 years old, sft. lOin. high, medium build, fair complexion, fair hair, whiskers, and moustache; rather thick upper lip, quick, active manner ; a groom, generally employed about coach stables; dresses respectably.

Christchurch, November 1, 1871.

G-eoege Austin is charged on warrant } filed in the Commissioner’s office, with deserting his. wife and children on the 9th May last. He is described as an Englishman, 30 or 31 years of age, sft. 4 or sin. high, stout J build, red hair, whiskers, and moustache; scar on back of head, no hair growing on it; much pockmarked; a splint-cutter (for matches) by trade, but usually works as a labourer.
