At about 9 p.m. on the 2nd November, 1870, an attempt was made to set fire to the shop of Charles Brooker, situate in Great South Road, Timaru, by pouring kerosene on the weatherboards, and setting fire to it. Mr. Brooker offers a reward of £2O for such information as will lead to the conviction of the party or parties who set fire to the building.
